It appears that OS X 10.1 will be announced tomorrow, and it should be available in some form by the end of the week. But I still maintain that Apple's lack of information to this point about how we will get our hands on the new system is a mistake. It seems to once again be a case where the engineering achievements of the Apple programmers threaten to be squandered by the ineptitude of the Apple marketing teams...

Get ready for an official announcement of OS X 10.1 when Steve Jobs speaks at the Seybold conference in California tomorrow. Among the Mac news sites making that speculation are: Macworld UK, MacNN and surely a host of other sites before this day is out. What remains a surprise is how we as OS X users will get our hands on this major update to the system? As of this morning, Apple's Web site still offers no way to pre-order OS X 10.1 and to make sure that you have it on your machine as soon as possible...[posted at 8:55 a.m. PDT]

Apple is still sending mixed messages. On this day to the week after the traumatic events unfolded in New York and Washington D.C., as the U.S. tries to get back to some resemblance of "normal," my thoughts have been drifting to the pending release of OS X 10.1. Over last weekend we saw news that Apple plans to offer free CDs with the major system update in selected stores, but solid details about where and when are not available. And today, if I as a Mac user know that I want the update as soon as it is offered, the details about how to even pay $19.95 to have a CD shipped to me are cloudy at best. If I go to the Apple OS X Web page, there is no clear link to a page to place an order for OS X 10.1. Can Apple be this clueless? If they want to sell this product, which by most accounts is ready to be released within a week or so, then they need to get their ducks in a row and offer concrete information about how to buy OS X 10.1...

A new hybrid Web and e-mail worm similar to Code Red is hitting the Net and slowing traffic in some areas to a crawl today. In an effort to keep my machine from being part of the flood of traffic trying to hit port 80 on Web servers as the worm scans for another system to be infected - this worm cannot infect OS X - I have disabled file sharing and Web sharing on my system for a bit. It may be wise for everyone to do this today if you don't specifically need to share files across Web sharing especially, since Web sharing on OS X is essentially just the Apache Web server running on port 80...[posted at 2:42 p.m. PDT]

I may return to updating Mac Net Journal later today, although I am definitely caught up in this national day of mourning for the victims of the terrorist attacks earlier this week.

Wednesday, September 12, 2001

I am still too caught up in the news of the World Trade Center and Pentagon terrorist attacks to worry about developments in the Mac and OS X world today. I am not updating Mac Net Journal today. I am doing some writing on my other Weblog, The Equinox Project...

Once again, I offer my prayers and condolences to all of those affected by these attacks.

Finally...after waiting a couple of weeks and spending eh weekend trying to resolve an issue with my new hardware, we in the Mac Net Journal offices are online with a new cable access service that is a bit faster than our old DSL, and best of all, free of the horrible customer service and spotty service from our DSL provider, Qwest! After I have our network running reliably on this cable system for a day or so then I will cut the cord on our DSL service and be paying considerably less for higher speed service. My fingers are crossed that everything keeps going well...

Count yourself as lucky if you already have Qwest DSL service with your Mac, because starting very soon it will be much harder to get DSL service through one of the largest telephone monopolies in the Western U.S. Qwest has entered a partnership with MSN, and, surprise surprise, there is no way for a Mac to use MSN DSL service. In order to use the more expensive and yet slower MSN service, you have to be running Windows, and it has to be Windows 98 Second Edition or higher at that.

This change in the Qwest DSL service along with the horrible customer support offered by Qwest in the wake of the Code Red Worm that hit last month are two of the main reasons that I am about to end my long-term DSL account with Qwest and move to a cable modem access solution for my home network. The cable service should be set up sometime Friday, and I go to pick up the new cable modem tomorrow. With the handful of horrible customer service situations in my past with Qwest, all I can say is good riddance. Now if I could only come up with a reliable option to avoid paying for any Qwest services at all...

By the way, I just received e-mail today from Qwest offering their final solution for the problems that Code Red caused for the old Cisco 675 and 678 routers. The solution is pretty involved, including downloading and installing a new firmware upgrade for the Cisco router. But beware if you use NAT or static IPs with your Qwest account, because the solution is even more involved for you...

News:

On the wireless networking front, New York Times writer and Seattle Times Mac columnist Glenn Fleishman makes the following points in a post to a discussion forum for the upcoming Seybold 2001 conference:

My strong prediction is that this kind of network changes our relationship to data and computing and starts the path toward ubiquitous computing that allows us to re-orient ourselves away from monolithic computing and sitting-at-a-desk tedium.
