-- There is more bad news today for anyone looking for a native Retrospect backup program for OS X. According to a note this morning on MacFixIt, Dantz has pushed release of the program into sometime late in the first quarter of next year. Dantz has a FAQ about the status of Retrospect for OS X. But what the situation boils down to is that the company has yet to find a way to get Retrospect to work under OS X as it does under OS 9.x. This leaves the growing mass of OS X users to fend for themselves in file backup solutions.
Most of the time I argue against Apple creating and bundling more essential software in its operating system, but this situation begs for someone to come up with a viable solution. Obviously Dantz is not up to the task at this point...[posted at 11:41 a.m. PDT]

Monday, November 5, 2001 For those of us who downloaded and installed iTunes 2 without major data loss and problems under OS X 10.1 over the weekend, feedback about the audio software has largely been positive. But I have to say that while I am happy to see the iTunes upgrade, I am not overly impressed. Why? Because 18 months or so ago I owned another MP3 player program that looked and acted a whole lot like iTunes - it was called SoundJam.
It is great to see that the Apple developers have brought iTunes up to the level of the two-year-old SoundJam program, but I cannot be too impressed. There is very little new here, unless you count the data loss and anger that Apple managed to elicit from many customers who hosed their machines by trying to install the first version of iTunes.
In short, iTunes 2 is a welcome update, but save the raves...
