-- "Those interested in slightly more recent computer history might want to know about next week's celebration of the first 10 years of QuickTime, Apple's extensible multimedia technology. The amazing thing about Quicktime is that there was nothing like it before, and everything has been like it since." - Robert Cringley writing in his latest column. The 10th anniversary of QuickTime will be marked on Dec. 1, 2001...[posted at 1:34 p.m. PDT]

-- O'Reilly Network has an article today detailing how you can use SSH with OS X to secure wireless data transfer. The article deals specifically with setting up a wireless Webcam and making FTPing the image data secure...[posted at 10 a.m. PDT]

-- MSNBC notes a new computer virus created by the FBI that allows agents to gather keystrokes from infected machines for later review. This allows the FBI to get around encryption software schemes, although I would bet that someone using SSH or something like it could get around the problem. Of course, I see no word about this virus working on Macs or Unix...[posted at 9:47 a.m. PDT]

-- It is interesting that the online computer sales vendor I have purchased three or four PowerBooks from, Outpost.com is no longer carrying Macs. They were a dying company anyway, so I guess this is no big loss...[posted at 9:40 a.m. PDT]

-- Do you subscribe to Yahoo! Internet Life or any other ZDNet publications? If so, a story on Wired News today details a major security breach yesterday that may have exposed your credit card number and personal information to hackers. -- MacFixIt's OS X section has interesting coverage of an issue where users cannot reinstall OS X 10.1 from the Update CD (the free version such as the one I picked up at CompUSA here last month, from what I can tell) after they have updated their OS X system to OS X 10.1.1. -- According to a report on MacCentral, AOL UK has canned development of an OS X version of its proprietary Web browser. AOL does expect to release an OS X version of its software in the U.S. later this year...[posted at 9:40 a.m. PDT]

-- Just in case you cannot afford the spendy upgrade to Office v. X, or on the off chance that you simply have no desire to own the suite, a new freeware file conversion tool called DOCtor 1.0 will take a Word created .doc file and convert it to PDF so that you can view it under OS X. -- In case the hype machine has not yet caught your eye, here is the obligatory reminder that Microsoft Office v. X is available starting today. It costs $149 to upgrade from a previous version of Office or $499 to buy a new license for the office suite that includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Entourage.
