I had my first crash with OS X 10.1.1 this morning. I was using a preview version of OmniWeb 4.1 as well as listening to iTunes 2 and running Classic applications (Palm Desktop) at the time, and the machine seemed to go into a loop with a frozen clock and nothing would pull it out of the loop. I did a three-fingered restart and my PowerBook booted into OS 9.2.1, ran through the Disk First Aid at startup and froze again, forcing another reboot into OS 9.2.1 before I could go back to OS X 10.1.1.

I have tried to duplicate the problem by using the OmniWeb browser and hitting some of the same Web sites, but no luck so far. I suspect that the machine needed to be run through either Disk First Aid or fsck under Unix to fix some loose files floating around after the update. Fingers crossed that it isn't anything more serious...and it looks like it is a good time for a quick backup CD to be burned...

One hour after installing the update to OS X 10.1.1 I am not seeing any problems with this update on my PowerBook 2000 FireWire (Pismo) with 192 megs of RAM.

Apple's notes about this 14.4 megabyte update say that it includes improvements to the Finder and Mail, as well as improvements for networking, compatibility and printing. There are also supposed to be upgrades to CD and DVD burning capabilities, although I can confirm that my Xcaret Pro CDRW drive in the expansion bay of my laptop still doesn't seem to be supported for CD burning in either the Finder or in iTunes 2.

I will continue playing with this update and note any major changes I notice as I work over the next day or two...but so far, there are no signs on my machine that this update holds major dangers like the first upgrade available to iTunes 2 under OS X a couple of weeks ago...

-- As part of its Microsoft Office v. X hype - er...reporting - MacCentral offers an in-depth glimpse of the $300 e-mail program bundled in the office suit, Entourage. $300 e-mail application? Yep, at this point there is no indication that Entourage for OS X will be offered as a standalone purchase, so the only way to get your hands on the e-mail and personal information manager program will be to buy Office v. -- Today's big news is the unveiling of the revised Airport Base Stations, Airport cards and Airport software version 2.0 (all detailed in depth on Apple's page at http://www.apple.com/airport). This should make Airport networking a bit more secure, with 128-bit encryption built into the software and base station, and the addition of a second Ethernet port to the base station should add flexibility for user blending wireless and wired networks. I know I am sure glad I haven't purchased an Airport Base Station before now. This revision seems much more intriguing for my home office...[posted at 2:02 p.m. PDT]
