Happy New Years to everyone! Here is to a successful first full calendar year using OS X and to a bigger and better 2002. This coming week with Macworld Expo in San Francisco looming could prove to be an interesting time for users of Apple computers and software...

What software am I using on the cusp of a new year? Here is a brief glimpse of what I am using, all OS X apps that live in my Dock:

PowerMail 3.1 (my current e-mail client of choice)
BBedit 6.1 (everyone needs a high-powered text editor)
Palm Desktop X beta (I am still not happy with this beta)
BrainForest 1.1 (my current outliner of choice)
AIM 4.5.494 (this new client offers file transfers and works solidly under OS X)
Internet Explorer 5.1.3 (I want to move to another browser full time, but...)
OmniWeb 4.1b1 (This could become my Web browser of choice, but not yet...I need reliable Java and Javascript...)
URL Manager Pro 3 (a real bookmark manager and more)
iTunes (hey, a guy needs his music to work by...)
GraphicConverter 4.1 (a great graphics editor)

I do use other applications, but these are my current mainstays...

News:

-- My initial enthusiasm for the new Palm Desktop X beta has waned. While I was able to install the program with no problems on my laptop, my wife Natalie couldn't get it to open her old data file at all and she had to reinstall the old version of Palm Desktop under Classic in order to keep on working with her backed up data file. I am also disappointed to see that under the new Palm beta there is still the stupid limitation that you can only have one memo open at a time, which is inexcusable. Imagine having a word processor that could only have one file open at a time...welcome back to the early 1980s...[posted at 1:24 p.m. PDT]

News:

-- Just FYI...I did pay for and download a copy of BrainForest Professional Edition 1.1, and it installed easily on both OS X and on my Palm. This is a great addition for anyone who relies on outlining tools and who would benefit from having access to the same tool on their Pam as well as on their home computer...[posted at 12:13 p.m. PDT]

-- Speaking of organizing tools and information management, Glenn Berston announced this morning on his IdeaKeeper mailing list that he has finished porting the unique organizing program to Carbon under OS X and he expects to unveil a preview release of the application very soon. The last major update to IdeaKeeper took place in May of 2000, so it is great to see development of this tool continue...[posted at 8:47 a.m. PDT]

-- Also on a Palm-related note, I am happy to see that Aportis has ported its outliner and organizer tool BrainForest Professional Edition 1.1 to OS X [MacNN]. I started building an information database in BrainForest last month, so I am glad to see that the application will have a life under OS X as it did while running under Classic. This is another step in the direction of making Classic less and less important for me. But, like many people, I need to see Photoshop and some other major applications running under OS X before I can completely remove Classic from my machine...[posted at 8:41 a.m. PDT]

-- People continue to play with and note their particular problems with Palm Desktop X. For a pretty good round-up of comments about people's experiences with the program and the installation process, check out the review on MacOSXHints...[posted at 8:37 a.m. PDT]

My self-imposed holiday season hiatus from updating Mac Net Journal is over and I am back into the fold of working today. The coming month holds some interesting things for me and my PowerBook. It is time to get started on the third book I will write on this trusty PowerBook 2000 FireWire machine - the third book I will write while using OS X as my main operating system. And along the way to writing this new book I plan to use some new tools such as outliner software to help shape the work I am doing on Birding Washington, a guide to the places to go see birds in their habitat in the state of Washington.

The next 10 months should be fun!

I will also have to bite the bullet and buy at least one copy of Microsoft Word X at some point in the coming year - that is unless I opt to use AppleWorks to do the whole project and simply save my documents as Word files from there. I have a copy of Office 98 that I still use now and then under Classic, but I have a hard time wanting to spend $300 to upgrade to a new version of Office or even $150 to buy Word X when I seldom use the program. We'll see what happens there.

News:

-- Like way too many people today, I spent a lot of time toying around to get a copy of Palm Desktop X loaded and running on my machine, and once I did, I was pleasantly surprised. The main tips I can offer for anyone who hasn't installed it yet:

1) Back up your data files from the OS 9 version of Palm Desktop, because the new version will delete your OS 9 version and could put your data at risk

2) Be sure to read the Read Me file to see what does and doesn't work in this beta version. Especially note that you need to completely shut down Classic in order to hotsync under OS X. This is a notable bug that is sure to frustrate people when they try to do an initial hotsync and have the operation fail if they failed to read the Read Me file in advance...

Now I look forward to the final version of Palm Desktop X and the addition of more third-party hotsync conduits to make sure that the plethora of Palm-compatible applications out there will work as flawlessly under OS X as they did under OS 9.x...[posted at 10:49 p.m. PDT]

-- A quick update on Palm Desktop X 4.0b76 - the servers are being bombarded right now and I still cannot grab a copy of the software for myself, but it should be noted that this software is a beta version and that it may contain bugs. But this does seem to be a full port of the Palm Desktop program that I have been using sporadically under Classic, and it does offer native OS X support for hotsynching...[posted at 8:58 a.m. PDT]

-- I see from a link on VersionTracker this morning that an OS X version of Palm Desktop is available now....no details yet, but I am downloading it now...[posted at 8:46 a.m. PDT]
