News:

-- MacFixIt is reporting this morning that an update release to OS X, bringing the software to version 10.1.2, could be released at any moment. It may be worthwhile to use your Software Update function in the System Preferences application at some point today to see if the software is available. One note of caution though...sometimes people encounter problems with their computers after a system update (think back to the iTunes debacle of a few weeks ago). It would be wise to back up your personal folder, library, and any applications you don't want to have to reinstall before updating to OS X 10.1.2...[posted at 11:56 a.m. PDT]

I received my January issue of MacAddict in the mail today. This issue holds the short comparison table I compiled for the magazine that takes a look at the e-mail applications offered under OS X and some of their comparative strengths and weaknesses. The article isn't online at this time.

I should note that the article is a little bit dated, as tends to happen when you try to match the speed at which applications change with the publishing schedule of a magazine. I compiled the information for the article right before the Sept. 11 attacks on America, and I did final editing on the piece while battling the haze of emotions after the terrorist attacks.

For the record, when I compiled the information for the table I was still using Eudora 5.1b16 under OS X, with a few flirtations with using Mail. Since writing the article, I have purchased and made the full switch to Powermail, a program that has been updated at least three times since September and a program that now can tie in with a third-party spell checker under OS X to add spell checking capabilities to Powermail...

News:

-- MacFixIt has a pretty extensive followup today to yesterday's mention of cable modem connection problems that they have faced under OS X. I am not convinced that OS X was at the root of my problem a couple of days ago, however. I experienced connection problems with a Mac running OS 9.0 as well as with a Windows laptop, so I think my problem was specific to my access provider and to the fact that one of the Ethernet cables I have used over the last few years was failing...[posted at 3:11 p.m. PDT]

-- The Washington Post has an interesting article noting that cable Internet access is completely free of government regulation, leaving those whose access is being cut - by either access providers going out of business or by intricate business negotiations that broke down and forced a game of chicken - stuck in the lurch without Internet access that they depend on [noted from Macintouch]...[posted at 11:59 a.m. PDT]

-- Nisus Email 1.6 brings the mail program to OS X. It now joins the ranks of the other OS X e-mail programs that are trying to establish a solid following - among them Eudora, Powermail, Mulberry, SweetMail and others (I don't include the $500 e-mail program Entourage here, since it is not available as a stand-alone e-mail solution)...[posted at 11:48 a.m. PDT]

-- Minor bug fixes mark the release of OmniWeb 4.06. I have been using the latest preview version of OmniWeb for a few weeks and other than speed problems, especially when you leave the browser running all day long, it is rock solid. Unfortunately, OmniWeb's sneaky peek releases are not available to everyone, but I understand that OmniWeb 4.1 is tentatively slated to appear next month at MacWorld Expo in San Francisco...[posted at 11:44 a.m. PDT]

I didn't have a chance to update Mac Net Journal yesterday due to the latest instance of computer hell we have been going through over the last week here. On Friday, my wife's PowerBook had to have its hard drive reformated and everything re-installed, and all of this happened while she was trying to finish up an advertisement under a deadline. And then tomorrow, for some unknown reason, our cable connection to the Net frustrated me all day. For hours on end I simply couldn't even get one computer online, let alone the three or four that I usually have running at any time.

Things are working this morning...fingers crossed...so I do hope to do my normal updates to the site.

Oddly enough, the folks who run the MacFixIt Web site have encountered a DHCP/Cable Internet access issue similar to what plagued me all day yesterday. They offer a brief note about their experience with the problem that in their situation only seemed to affect machines that were running OS X at the time that access was mysteriously lost. In my case, the problem also cropped up with my older PowerBook 3400c that runs under OS 9.x...
