Killer Palm apps
Monday, October 30, 2006, 11:04 PM

I know that Palm applications and Treos like the 650 I use to manage my daily walkabout life are far from in vogue, but there are many people out there who still rely on electronic tethers to help manage their lives. For those people, Lifehacker offers a must-read story today: 12 killer apps for Palm PDAs

Getting even more addicted to Tinderbox
Tuesday, October 24, 2006, 10:59 PM

After so many years of using Tinderbox to run various Web sites, including Mac Net Journal, I have finally truly caught the Tinderbox bug by using the information manager program as a collection point for much of my work with the City of Tacoma. It's my job to stay on top of all kinds of information, and there is no better way to do that and to carry out my own developing version of Getting Things Done than to keep everything in Tinderbox.

My work Tinderbox is very vanilla. At this point much of my work is done in the outline view, and there are no agents running - just a growing list of nested containers that hold meeting notes and other tidbits.

I still have more to learn. I know that I could be using the map view a lot more for note taking and drawing connections between issues and concepts I need to track. But the more I immerse myself in the program, the more I like it.

Too bad I won't be at the Tinderbox Weekend this week in Boston. It sounds like program creator Mark Bernstein is about to unveil the final version of his book project, The Tinderbox Way. It makes me wonder when he will offer it for download...

Opera Mini - a new Web browser for my Treo
Tuesday, October 24, 2006, 10:26 PM

It took a little work, but tonight I downloaded and installed the Opera Mini browser on my Treo 650. I have yet to see the speed increases that I have read about in some reports, but the browser sure renders pages better than the built in Blazer browser.

Here is what CNET had to say about Opera Mini:

Opera Mini sings for handhelds - The Web browser has been tweaked for the small screen and is now available for Treo and BlackBerry. [CNET News.com]

Time management tricks for managers
Monday, October 23, 2006, 11:06 PM

As my time gets tighter and tighter every week in my new job - as evidenced by the extreme lack of posts this month on Mac Net Journal - finding new ways to focus and get more from my time is becoming an obsession. Thankfully, I'm not the only one, as evidenced by Lifehacker's post today: Top time-management tricks

Another rumble near Mt. Rainier
Saturday, October 7, 2006, 11:21 PM

Tonight while I was at a musical performance in downtown Tacoma, a larger than normal earthquake struck about 50 miles from here on the east side of Mt. Rainier. The 4.5 magnitude quake hit around 7:45 p.m. Pacific Time. Since I was driving at the time, I didn't feel a thing...
