Intelligent Mac backups
Saturday, May 27, 2006, 9:56 AM

Tyler Hall writes a useful article about How to backup you Mac intelligently on sitening.com. If you don't already have a backup stratgey for your Mac and its data, there are some good common-sense tips here.

MacCentral reviews Canon EOS 30D
Friday, May 19, 2006, 10:35 AM

Review: Canon EOS 30D Digital SLR - The Canon EOS 30D is a welcome upgrade to an already great camera. The larger LCD screen and new features will directly affect everyday shooting, while the lower price tag will give you an extra $100 to spend on lenses. [MacCentral]

I am interested in this review, since last week Natalie and I placed an order with a local camera shop to buy this exact camera - and we should be getting it any day now! Natalie will get to use the 30D, while I will continue to use the 20D that we have had for a little more than a year now...

How to keep Thunderbird running and reliable
Wednesday, May 17, 2006, 10:55 PM

Steven Vaughan-Nichols writes about Keeping Thunderbird from Breaking. As someone who has been using the Mac version of Thunderbird full time for a couple of weeks, I think this is something worth reading.

Why did I switch to Thunderbird from PowerMail? Simple: PowerMail has been a stellar tool for me for many years, but it was just crashing too often. Out with the old, in with the Thunderbird. At least for now, as I do some real testing...

On visual note keeping
Wednesday, May 17, 2006, 1:01 PM

DIY Planner offers an interesting note today about using visuals in planning. This is one strength of some planning and writing tools over others. In Tinderbox, I can't easily draw to do visual planning, but I can use the map view to draw out the relationships between ideas, or to nest disparate pieces of information together.

As the article notes, sometimes looking at information or a process with a different view can lead to new ideas, and sometimes a picture is worth more than a description.

New MacBook looks excellent!
Tuesday, May 16, 2006, 10:07 AM

It looks like Apple has made it even tougher to decide which new Intel-based notebook computer to buy. The new MacBook with its 13-inch LCD, up to 2 GB of RAM and up to 120 GB hard drive is a real deal. The machine seems to compare favorably to the 15-inch MacBook Pro, just from the quick glance that I can give this while at work today.

Since I do hope to buy a new notebook from Apple this year, this will make the decision even more interesting...

How many birds will we see?
Friday, May 12, 2006, 11:04 PM

Tomorrow morning we take off across the state on our annual Birdathon trip. The goal: To see as many bird species as we can within a single day. Last year we managed to see 125 species, despite poor weather conditions. The weather should be better tomorrow. Fingers crossed!

So far, a pitiful posting month
Friday, May 12, 2006, 10:54 PM

My apologies for the extremely light posting so far this month. My work has taken another turn, and I have been essentially working two jobs since March. Now my boss is leaving, which puts me at least temporarily in charge for a while. It's a very busy time.

I need to get even better at juggling.

A good hint - use Boot Camp Assistant to partition your HD
Monday, May 1, 2006, 7:38 PM

Mac OS X Hints has a great tip for how to partion your Mac's hard drive without needing to erase and reformat the whole drive - using Boot Camp Assistant. Alas, the tip is only useful for owners of Intel-based Macs...

More hysteria about Mac viruses
Monday, May 1, 2006, 12:04 AM

CNN has a story today about the growing threat of Mac viruses, but like all major media pieces about the issue - which may or may not be a valid concern for savvy users who would avoid the siren call of downloading unreleased versions of operating systems (cough...some people deserve to get a virus). I will not panic, and I will continue to scoff at the hysteria.
