Crying wolf, but Dvorak may have a point
Tuesday, December 28, 2004, 1:11 PM

Longtime Mac hater John Dvorak cries wolf over what he sees as impending doom for the Mac today in Grim Macintosh Market Share Forebodes Crisis. While I can't agree with his overall message, Dvorak does has a few good points in his article. The Mac market share is woeful and it is barely growing, if it is growing at all. Meanwhile, all we hear from Apple these days is about music, iTunes and iPods. Apple should be able to ride the popularity of the overpriced iPod for a while yet, and earnings reports will continue to paint pretty pictures of the health of the company, but out in the real world where people use their computers for something more than playing music, Apple doesn't seem to be paying as much attention as it once did. Hopefully that will all change next month at Macworld Expo in San Francisco, if Apple unveils new machines and new features outside the realm of music.

One ironic note is that John Dvorak's previous opinion piece was full of whining about how his Windows machine has been plagued by spyware and how the spyware problem will be one of the main computing issues of 2005. Hello, John. If you had been paying any attention at all then you would understand that one of the major benefits of being a Mac user these days is that we can keep computing while Windows folks are battling spyware, adware and viruses. |

Outliner wishes and Xmas dreams
Wednesday, December 22, 2004, 9:39 PM

Giles Turnbull writes about the dream outliner application he wants for Christmas - a hybrid between TAO and BBEdit. I like his ideas, although I will admit that reading his piece reminds me just how much my job with the City of Tacoma has changed the way that I use my Mac. I haven't been able to test apps like TAO or even the new versions of OmniOutliner Pro as thoroughly as I once did when I was underemployed and doing a lot more writing about Macs on MNJ.

On the other hand, I am still using my Mac for work, sometimes even more varied work than I did while working at home. Video and audio editing, more work integrating my PowerBook into a Windows work environment and more time spent working within Tinderbox to create Web sites and project outlines.

A weekend for the birds
Sunday, December 19, 2004, 10:12 PM

I spent all day Saturday communing with birds and nature in Point Defiance Park, as I did the walk through the woods as part of the annual Christmas Bird Count. We watched woodpeckers galore and had glorious weather. It's a perfect way to cap a year of birding in Washington. Natalie and I have seen 250 species of birds in Washington this year.

MacCentral: Photo products of the year
Friday, December 17, 2004, 10:13 AM

Photo Products of the Year and Reader Awards - Macworld readers are a savvy bunch. You have pretty strong opinions about, well, pretty much everything. (Want proof? Just visit the Macworld.com forums.) So a couple of months ago, we asked the denizens of Macworld.com, "What are your picks for hardware and software products of the year?" After collecting hundreds of nominations, we whittled them down to the favorites and then put the list up for an online vote. When the dust cleared, there were two clear winners for our Readers' Choice Awards. [MacCentral]

Giles Turnbull on Thunderbird 1.0
Wednesday, December 8, 2004, 9:06 PM

Giles Turnbull gives pretty good marks to the 1.0 release of the free Thunderbird e-mail program from the Mozilla folks. I am still relying on PowerMail on my Macs right now, but I am intrigued with the idea of a useful open-source e-mail app that works on Macs, Windows and other OS flavors. Read Giles' take on the program on the MacDevCenter...

OmniOutliner 3.0 beta
Monday, December 6, 2004, 11:08 PM

I have been playing around with the new beta versions of OmniOutliner for a while now. Since my main use for OO in the past was for writing and planning the writing of the Birding Washington book, it looks like I had better find another book project in order to really put the new version through its paces.

MacCentral digs into the current public beta:

OmniOutliner 3.0 Beta now available - The Omni Group on Friday released a public Beta of OmniOutliner 3.0, with a Beta of OmniOutliner 3.0 Professional due "in the next few weeks" -- the developer expects to ship the final versions of both in early 2005. New features added to the outlining tool include support for attachments, a batch find operation, new export options and more, including such performance improvements as better AppleScript support. OmniOutliner Professional will offer such additional features as folded editing, named styles, support for audio recordings and more. [MacCentral]

Thoughts about typefaces...and newsreaders
Wednesday, December 1, 2004, 8:54 PM

Speaking of Web and print design, today CreativeBits has a few words about Organizing your thoughts about typefaces. My thoughts: Keep it simple, and double that if you are considering typefaces for the Web....

By the way, CreativeBits is another of those cool sites worth subscribing to in NetNewsWire or the news reader or browser of your choice. These days I track RSS feeds at home with NetNewsWire and at work with OmniWeb. For some reason I cannot get NetNewsWire to download feeds through the City of Tacoma firewall, but OmniWeb can do it just fine. |

The end of Web Page Design for Designers
Wednesday, December 1, 2004, 8:19 PM

I have to mention that I am saddened to read that a great monthly resource is disappearing with this month's edition, posted today - Web Page Design for Designers. Site creator Joe Gillespie writes in his farewell column:

Well, this is the 80th WPDFD editorial and after more than eight years of writing and producing Web Page Design for Designers for the first of every month, I've decided to stop running. My sixtieth birthday is looming large and I'm out of breath!

I'm retiring.
