The new iMac G5
Tuesday, August 31, 2004, 10:17 AM

Apple: iMac G5 - As expected, the iMac G5 is a computer built into a flat-panel display, starting at $1299 for a 17-inch model. [MacInTouch]

The machine looks pretty stunning. It will be interesting to see and touch one in order to feel more secure about the weight of the machine sitting up in the air over the stand, and for my needs I would sure want to have real video out rather than simple mirroring capabilities in this machine. |

An interesting testimonial for BBEdit 8.0
Monday, August 30, 2004, 9:21 PM

I don't use BBEdit as much as I used to, but the release of version 8.0 today and reading this testimonial by Boing Boing writer Cory Doctorow has me thinking I should pay for a new license.

BBEdit 8.0 is a $49 upgrade for users of BBEdit 7.x. A new license, on the other hand, weighs in at $179...

Tinderbox as a whiteboard tool
Sunday, August 29, 2004, 6:37 PM

Mark Bernstein does some interesting writing about using Tinderbox as a whiteboard tool. It is always interesting to see how others are using Tinderbox, especially when that someone else is the program's creator!

To take two laptops or not
Sunday, August 29, 2004, 5:59 PM

I face a weighty question over the next couple of days before I leave for a government communications conference in Denver - to take just my Windows laptop from work or to also lug along my 12-inch PowerBook G4. I can get by with the huge Gateway laptop running Windows XP, which I have to take in order to keep in touch with work and to update a city Web site while I am on the road, but I would prefer to have my iTunes library and Tinderbox with me. I'm still considering the best course of action... |

Back from a sickness break
Thursday, August 26, 2004, 6:48 PM

I spent the last two days at home from my job with the City of Tacoma as I dealt first with a huge head cold that made its way into a feverish afternoon yesterday. The whole bout may be a sign to take it a little easier. Earlier in the week and over the weekend I had launched into a pretty steady running schedule, after not running at all for a couple of months, and then even after the cold hit me on Tuesday, I still insisted in heading out and buying a used car - a '98 Subaru Outback that was too good a deal to wait - and then hanging out with friends as usual until too late into the night.

.Mac users get new Virex
Monday, August 23, 2004, 10:45 PM

MacCentral notes that .Mac users can now download and start using Virex 7.5. I know that I shouldn't mock this announcement, but when Macs are nearly virus free, I am not sure this is such a big perk...

Thursday, August 19, 2004, 10:19 PM

PowerBook Batteries Recalled - Some 28,000 rechargeable batteries used in 15-inch Apple PowerBook G4 computers are being recalled voluntarily by Apple, and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. An internal short in the batteries made by LG Chem Ltd., of South Korea, can cause the battery cells to overheat, posing a fire hazard to consumers. TidBITS looks at OmniWeb 5.0
Tuesday, August 17, 2004, 10:11 AM

The venerable Mac news magazine TidBITS offers a good look at the new OmniWeb 5.0 browser. I have been using OW 5.0 as my main browser since the new version arrived last week, and it has worked flawlessly. It is a little slower than some other browsers, but the workspace feature and other added touches make up for the lack of speediness in the browser, at least in my case.

It's Olympic kick off day!
Friday, August 13, 2004, 9:31 AM

Live coverage of the Olympic Games in Greece starts in 30 minutes on Canadian TV and in 11 hours on American TV. I'm looking forward to the spectacle of sport, although I will be on the road and birding watching this weekend rather than glued to the TV screen. Regardless, the opening ceremonies should be interesting, and I especially look forward to live and relatively unbiased coverage of the Games on CBC as compared to the overhyped and tape-delayed coverage in the U.S.

Glenn gives Apple credit for its AirPort ID scheme
Thursday, August 12, 2004, 10:11 PM

Where Is My Network? - Apple has apparently done the right thing, according to Glenn Fleishman, in naming the default SSID of its wireless network based on the AirPort's unique hardware identifier.
"What happens when 500 networks in a building are called 'linksys,' 'default,' or 'netgear'?" [myapplemenu]

OmniWeb 5.0 browser available
Wednesday, August 11, 2004, 3:18 PM

Fans of the OmniWeb alternative Web browser have reason for excitement today, as the folks at The Omni Group in Seattle have released OmniWeb 5.0. I have been using OW again as my main browser for the last couple of days, so I will surely be downloading the new version when I get home tonight. OW 5.0 is a $9.95 upgrade for those holding licenses for version 4.x and it is a $29.95 purchase for a new license.

Are you upgrading? Do the features in OmniWeb give it enough of a boost to best Apple's free Safari and the other free browsers on the Mac OS X market? |

And yet another update, this time Java
Wednesday, August 11, 2004, 8:59 AM

I noticed this morning that Apple had rolled out another software update, this time bumping the Java version for Mac OS X 10.3.3 and higher up a notch to make applets more reliable in Safari. I installed the update. I see little difference. The world goes on.

No problems so far with 10.3.5 or security update
Tuesday, August 10, 2004, 11:31 AM

Neither Mac OS X 10.3.5 or the security update released yesterday from Apple have caused any problems so far for my 12-inch PowerBook G4. In fact, it seems like the fan is running less on my hot little PowerBook than it was before this update.

Apple updates OS X with 10.3.5
Monday, August 9, 2004, 3:56 PM

Apple has rolled out an update to Mac OS X with version 10.3.5 today. The update offers "enhanced functionality and improved reliability" according to Apple's release notes and press reports. Apple has also posted a knowledge base article with more complete details about the update, which is recommended for all users. You can grab the update through the Software Update panel in System Preferences.

I won't be able to check out this update for myself until later tonight, when I get home. But as a gentle reminder, everyone should back up their machines before updating to Mac OS X 10.3.5, just as you should do before adding any major software to a Mac. It is also recommended that you fix permissions on your system before and after installing the update.

Let's talk about how the update is working! |

iPhoto update reappears, with a different version name

Apple Posts iPhoto 4.0.3 Update - The text of the update information is identical to the 4.0.2 release published earlier this week. "iPhoto 4.0.3 addresses minor issues with Smart Albums and European books, and provides notifications when new versions of iPhoto are available." By Peter Cohen, MacCentral (via MyAppleMenu) [myapplemenu]

Useful Safari add-ons
Friday, August 6, 2004, 12:08 PM

Backup Brain offers a useful list of add-ons for Apple's Safari browser:

Safari addons and plugins
I'm working on a project that involves a roundup of Safari addons and utilities. Here's the ones I've got so far that I think might be worth including. Got any other recommendations?

If there's any others that you like, or if you have a strong opinion on any of the above, please let me know in the comments. Note, though, that this list doesn't include bookmark managers; that's a whole different thing, and one that I'm not taking on as I don't use bookmarks myself. [Backup Brain]

I have been using Safari as my default browser for a month or so, mostly because of the stability of the browser and the fact that it is so easy on the system resources on my 12-inch PowerBook G4.
