The Tiger has landed
Friday, April 29, 2005, 6:27 PM

While I may be waiting a few days to install Tiger on my aging PowerBook, I will use this post over the weekend to gather useful tidbits and stories from across the Net related to the release. Let's get started:

It's alive!
Thursday, April 28, 2005, 12:46 PM

Scientists confirmed today that there have been eight reliable sightings of Ivory-billed Woodpeckers in an Arkansas swamp, proving that the species that was once feared to be extinct has survived. Expect a lot of news and research about the remaining population in the coming months, as well as a large influx of birders making the trek to the swamps of Arkansas.

Here are links to the news, including video clips and a PDF that offers analysis of the video:

The Ivory-billed Woodpecker may not be dead yet!
Wednesday, April 27, 2005, 9:49 PM

Years of research and simply searching the swamps and bayous of Southeastern America may have paid off in the form of North America's largest woodpecker - the famed Ivory-billed Woodpecker that has been feared to be extinct for decades. Wildlife experts in Arkansas say they have seen the species seven times, and there is even talk of a snippet of video footage. And all of this has bird watchers and bird lovers going nuts on the Net tonight.

Here are some links:

This is either the most exciting birding news of the new century, or the best false alarm or hoax of the century...

Getting ready for Tiger
Tuesday, April 26, 2005, 10:52 PM

Housecleaning Tips for Tiger - Is your Mac ready for a smooth transition to Tiger? Maybe you're in need of a Spring housecleaning anyway. Check out these tidy tips from Derrick Story, then roll out the red carpet for Mac OS X 10.4. [O'Reilly MacDevCenter.com]

As it turns out, I won't be making the leap to Tiger until Sunday at the earliest. There is just too much going on Friday and Saturday for me to jump on the bandwagon, which means this will be the first time since the initial arrival of Mac OS X that I won't be installing a new OS revision on its day of introduction. Somehow, I think the world will continue on without me...

The opportunities offered by LinkBack
Saturday, April 16, 2005, 9:17 AM

LinkBack: Applications Working Together - Have you ever carefully created a chart or graphic and then pasted it into a report only to discover you needed to change it later? Apps should work together so you can make this sort of change with just a few clicks. That's now possible thanks to a new open source technology called LinkBack. Even better, you can add this technology to your own applications. Charles Jolley, creator of LinkBack, shows you how. [O'Reilly MacDevCenter.com]

Tiger coming April 29, villagers scared
Tuesday, April 12, 2005, 7:33 AM

MacCentral notes that Tiger will ship on Friday, April 29, and that frantic pre-orders are available now. I am not so sure about the two-week build up for this release - it seems like an odd way to roll out a big update to a major operating system. Regardless, I'll look forward to seeing what Tiger has to offer...

News: Mac OS X Tiger to ship April 29 - Apple on Tuesday announced the ship date for its next generation operating system, Mac OS X Tiger. The operating system, which the company says includes hundreds of enhancements, will be available to customers beginning at 6:00 pm on Friday, April 29, 2005, at special events held at the company's retail locations and authorized retailers. Pre-orders for Tiger are being taken today at the online Apple Store -- Tiger will cost US$129. [MacCentral]

Confessions of a WiFi wrangler
Monday, April 11, 2005, 8:51 PM

I have a confession to make. Last weekend, for the second weekend in the last month, Natalie and I stayed in a lower cost hotel without WiFi access, and to get around this limitation we got online for free by parking near a Best Western hotel and sipping some free WiFi to check our e-mail. Although this isn't earth shattering or even all that uncommon, I had to get that off my chest.

Oh, and for anyone who plans to rely on tricks like this to get online while on road trips, it may make more sense to use an iBook for this than a PowerBook like my first generation 12-inch PowerBook G4. While Natalie sat in the car, warm and safe from the breeze last Friday night, I was the sap sitting at a picnic table at 10 p.m. in temperatures in the low 30s so that I could get two bars on my WiFi connection...

On writing another book - this time delving into history
Saturday, April 2, 2005, 6:57 PM

Natalie and I just returned home from the local library with research materials for our newest book project. The contract is yet to be signed, and we are still debating a little over how badly we will get screwed doing this book, but we are interested enough in the topic for Washington Disasters and Heroic Rescues that I imagine we will move forward with the project despite misgivings about indemnity clauses, advances and other lawyerly language in the book contract.

So what exactly is this book? It will profile 20-25 of the most significant disasters in Washington state, from the Native American legends around the great subduction zone earthquake that struck on the Pacific Northwest coast in January 1700 to the more recent disasters such as the 1980 eruption of Mt. St. Helens.

This will be a short sprint of a project - a 200-250 page manuscript to be finished between today and October 1, 2005. Somehow we will try to work the writing and research into our already busy schedule that includes working 40-50 hours a week outside the home, being co-presidents of the Tahoma Audubon Society and trying to maintain our lives and sanity. Once again, the project feels like a good opportunity to create something and learn a lot about our state along the way. Am I insane? Yes... |

An interesting read for this tax season
Saturday, April 2, 2005, 6:44 PM

The New York Times has an interesting article in the April 3 edition regarding the popular, yet unproven axim that raising taxes will slow economic growth. If tax policy interests you like it does me on this rainy weekend in the Pacific Northwest, read Do Taxes Thwart Growth? Prove It.
