NetNewsWire Lite beta will address bandwidth
Bandwidth stats coming in next NetNewsWire beta. Here’s a screen shot of a new feature coming in the next NetNewsWire beta—bandwidth statistics.
[inessential.com]
Now I am wondering why MNJ is shown in the linked graphic as one of the worst sites for bandwidth use? I was previously told that Radio Userland supports bandwidth-friendly features out of the box, and I think my templates are OK...but obviously something is amiss...

Judge to Microsoft: Status quo
Judge OKs most of Microsoft settlement. just in A federal judge largely accepts a proposed settlement in Microsoft's long-running antitrust case with the U.S. Justice Department. [CNET News.com]
This decision should be no surprise to anyone. With the economy threatening to slip into a double dip and with the government's history of reacting so slowly to antitrust related claims as to make any decision moot by the time it is rendered, I am not surprised at all that MS today gets the go ahead for business as usual.

A few changes with MNJ
If you read Mac Net Journal through the Web site you will notice that I have drastically cut the amount of information appearing on the front page of the site. MNJ now has just the last two days worth of news on the front page. Of course, all of the rest of the older news is still right there, accessible through the calendar interface or the search feature...

Zoe Control as a front end to the Zoe email tool
Zoe Control. - Rodney Tamblyn: "I've written an OSX application to provide a GUI front-end to Zoe. This has been developed in Applescript Studio. You can download it from my Zoe Control homepage. Today I have released an update which provides an XML overview of the days messages using XML Tools OSAX from Late Night Software." [AppleScript Info]

Serious bandwidth
Dave Winer mentions the issue of bandwidth use with Radio Userland and RSS based Web sites in general today, noting that the issue is growing. I can attest to that. In October MNJ set all kinds of new records for the number of hits and visits, but the number that really jumps out at me is the number of kilobytes passed through the Web site (which actually includes more than just MNJ, but also my site for White Rabbit Publishing and the languishing Equinox Project which I will update sometime today). Total kilobytes passed through my server account: 10,170,558.
What does this mean? It means that the excess bandwidth charges to cover October are going to be a serious issue, and with bandwidth growing at a rate of more than 2 million kilobytes a month, the need for donations to support MNJ and keep the site alive is even greater.

Mac modifications
Leander Kahney has a pair of articles about Mac modifications, from case painting to serious hardware tweaks, today on the Wired News site: 'Modders' can't leave Macs alone and Japan's growing Mac 'mod' squad.
I am about to do a much more standard mod to my G3 PowerBook 2000 - replace the old 18GB IBM hard drive with a newer and I hope to the gods quieter 40GB IBM drive that I am about to order. This hard drive has such a loud buzzing sound that it is impossible to use in a quiet room without nearly triggering a headache. It's time...
