Google buckles under
BBC: "A government is saying to Google: 'we don't like that website -- so drop it from your database' and the company is acquiescing." [Scripting News]
And so the question is, given this information, is Google really the top search tool when it is so willing to compromise on what is and isn't included in its search database? Or is this a prudent and reasonable approach for the folks at Google, and an acceptible situation for those using Google?

Comparing Apples and Penguins
Comparing Apples and Penguins. Moshe Bar at Byte.com has performed a careful and thorough side-by-side benchmark/comparison of OS X as a pure server (not desktop) environment by installing both OS X and the SuSE PowerPC Linux distribution on an XServe. Short story: OS X lost to Linux on every measurable count, but Moshe is still impressed, since OS X is so new while Linux has had a decade to tune its subsystems. To my knowledge, this is the first such test done with this degree of care. [Meerkat: An Open Wire Service]

A compelling look at Microsoft's Tablet PC
Hiwatha Bray of The Boston Globe offers a look at Microsoft's Tablet PC, pointing out that this time the folks from Redmond may have created their own innovation rather than adopting and marketing other people's ideas...
Innovation or not, I wonder how many Mac users are going to wish that Apple came out with this concept rather than Microsoft?

Palm rolls out Tungsten PDAs
Palm Unveils Two Pricey PDAs. Sure, the company's new handheld computers look cool, but can users afford to take them home? By Elisa Batista. [Wired News]
The Tungsten T sounds like it would be a great replacement for my Palm Vx, though the price is up there. I am also not so sure that I want to ever buy a standalone PDA again, but rather a device that integrates phone and PDA features into one unit. Everything is a trade off though...

It's time: Goodbye to OS 9.x on my PowerBook
Last week I had to reformat the 18GB hard drive in my Pismo PowerBook and reinstall OS X 10.2.1, and along the way I completely forgot to reinstall OS 9.x as the Classic environment. I've decided I am not going back. If I need a legacy app, I will use it on my old PowerBook 3400c. No more Classic for me...
