Drive-by Spam....tastes like chicken
Drive-by spam hits wireless LANs. The proliferation of insecure corporate wireless networks fuels the growth of this new spamming tactic, a security expert warns. And ISPs could cut off companies that fall victim. [CNET News.com]
This story combined with some others that try to paint open wireless connections as major security threats make me reminiscent of the days when the Internet went from something cool and interesting to something that the media wanted to paint as the worst thing that could happen to society. It is a clear signal that wireless Internet access has arrived.

I spoke too soon
Last night I noted that I had upgraded Natalie's Pismo PowerBook to Jaguar and that she wasn't having any problems with it. Turns out, she was. Her copy of iTunes, which was not upgraded to the newest version when I did the upgrade installation to OS X 10.2, was completely hosed by the installation. I had to re-install iTunes and she lost her custom playlists in the process, but otherwise things are back to normal...

MS offers patch for Windows machines, not Macs
I see this morning that Microsoft has released patches for its affected applications on the Windows platform that are vulnerable to the latest security flaw, but patches for Mac applications are still pending. For complete details about the flaw, and to see when MS rolls out a fix for Macs, check here.
Once again, this is a great reason to avoid Microsoft applications. Unless you want to spend valuable time watching the news for details about future security problems - problems that once were not an issue at all on the Mac - then consider alternative applications to the IE, Office majority.

eFilm Picture Pad looks interesting
For Shutterbugs, a Pocket Drive That Frees Up the Media Cards. Need further evidence that digital cameras are among the hottest-selling techno-gadgets around? Consider the array of accessories intended for the shutterless shutterbug these days. By Michel Marriott. [New York Times: Technology]
I still wonder why the NY Times and other newspapers refuse to offer basic information in their articles, such as the URL to read more about this digital photography device. If you are interested, read about the eFilm Picture Pad at Delkin Devices.
Steve's Digicams offers a much more detailed review of the Picture Pad, and reading through it is a bit unclear if the device works well with Mac OS X...

Watson 1.5.5 adds Google search
Watson 1.5.5, the shareware application for gathering information from across the Net for display in its user interface and the inspiration for the less-capable Sherlock 3 utility in Jaguar, has been updated to add Google search and access to goods from Amazon.com as two of the 19 Web services accessible from the program. Watson costs $29 for a single-user license and $39 for a household license.

Why no JPEGs as screen shots?
An MNJ reader sent email yesterday regarding a comment I made about the latest version of the freeware utility Tinkertool. Under Mac OS X 10.1.5, Tinkertool could alter the operating system to make it save screen shots in JPEG format rather than the normal TIFF format - a time saver that meant I wouldn't have to fire up GraphicConverter every time I took a screen shot to convert the image format to something I could use on a Web page. Tinkertool doesn't have this ability under Jaguar, and Bryan Pietrzak points out a comment from an email list that explains why:" Screenshot support was reimplemented in 10.2 (moved from HIToolbox to SystemUIServer and CoreGraphics), and CG only supports writing PDF at this time. Future versions of the OS may support other formats." - written August 30,2002 by Eric Schlegel So, it looks like it will be a while before we see screen shots available in any format other than the less-than-optimal PDF format...
