Some simple tips for those making the switch
Ease into the Switch. When new users come to the Mac platform, they bring fresh eyes and sometimes keen observations, which are useful for all of us. Here, recent switcher Michael Brewer offers a bucket-full of useful Mac OS X tips that he put together the old-fashioned way. [Meerkat: An Open Wire Service] 6:18:40 PM comment

Oops...Junk Mail sometimes misses
As innovative and as good as it is, Apple's Junk Mail feature built into Mail 1.2 is not perfect. The best example: This morning I found one of the noted "Nigerian" spam messages in my In box, despite having Junk Mail set up to filter and move spam automatically to the Junk Mail folder.

I also offer a quick word of warning if you have set your Junk Mail to automatically go into the Junk Mail folder. Check that folder now and then as your Mail program learns better what is and what isn't junk. Yesterday I found a critical work email message in the Junk Mail folder. Of course, Mail was right on in moving 14 other spam messages to the Junk Mail folder. Progress! 8:23:51 AM comment

Updates to my ongoing ranking of OS X applications
I spent a little time this morning adding to my ongoing OS X apps ranked by category story, which has passed the four month mark as a "living outline" on the Mac Net Journal site. Among the changes, I bump iChat to the top of the list of single-protocol chat clients:
iChat - (Free, sort of. Bundled with Jaguar) The chat client that is bundled with Jaguar or Mac OS X 10.2 beats the rest of the clients for the AOL Instant Messenger protocol with unique features that the other programs, including AOL's own chat client, have yet to get right under OS X. File transfers work, you can see each buddy's away messenger right on the screen without any extra effort on your part, and though the default behavior of the program takes up too much screen space, you can adjust the settings to make iChat behave like something other than the cartoon chat program it looks like in Apple's marketing.

I also bumped the newest version of Apple's Mail application up to the number two slot in my ranking of OS X email clients:

Mail 1.2 (Updated in OS X 10.2) - (Bundled with Mac OS X) Mail has grown into a much more usable email client with the update to Jaguar. The Junk Mail features are innovative and Rules can now be set using nearly unlimited criteria. There are still no options for setting labels on messages - a feature I use a lot under PowerMail and that I relied on under Eudora - and keyboard navigation under Mail is woeful. The user interface also feels slow - it takes too long when selecting a new mailbox or message for its contents to appear. Still, the Spam killing features may make Mail a choice for more people.
