An addition to the Jag incompatibility list
MNJ reader Eric Poustie says that his Brother MCF line of all-in-one, USB-based machines are not compatible with Jaguar and that even trying to install the machine in the printer list causes his machine to hang. In digging around for the status of a new driver, he found this page from the Brother Web site. A driver is coming...that is the good news.

I am adding this info to my ongoing Jaguar incompatibility list... 8:20:04 PM comment

A second look at iChat
Pssst...don't tell anyone, but I think I just found some cross-platform goodness in using iChat rather than Proteus or Fire for AIM connectivity. For the first time since I moved to Mac OS X in October 2000, I can once again do direct connections with Windows users, and transfering files with Windows users is simple. This hasn't even been working for me with the official AIM client from AOL...

Cross-platform file transfers are just part of what can be done with iChat. Writing on the O'Reilly Networks site, Derrick Story dug into the benefits of using iChat and Rendezvous to do impromptu peer-to-peer chat.

"At first glance iChat seems like just another IM client. But below that cartoon-like surface is a powerful P2P networking engine. If you're not a big fan of the balloon captions and buddy icons, those can be turned off via the "View" dropdown menu.
I am still not sold on iChat as my only AIM client, but it definitely holds potential for niche uses... 6:18:19 PM comment

Rendezvous released as open-source code
Apple invites open source to Rendezvous. The Mac maker says it's not just opening up the source code for its Rendezvous networking tool--it's actively courting open-source developers to work with the technology. [CNET News.com] 5:54:11 PM comment

For those so interested in MORE
There has been a lot of talk on Scripting News and elsewhere around the Net these past couple of days about MORE, the venerable outliner from the 1980s that is still available to run under Classic in Mac OS X as well as under other platforms. In all of the talk so far though, there has yet to be a mention of A href="http://www.omnigroup.com/applications/omnioutliner/">OmniOutliner, the outliner from the Omni Group that is trying to emulate and improve upon the features in MORE. If you are into outliners and you can run Mac OS X, OO is worth a look! To learn more about OO without downloading the demo, check out the FAQ or join the mailing list. 4:43:09 PM comment

Newsreaders streamline watching Web news
Working the web: Newsreaders. Ben Hammersley writes in the UK Guardian: “I don’t mean to brag but it’s 8.30am and I’ve already got up to date with 75 different websites. I’ve read all their headlines, perused the articles of interest, and I’m only half way through my coffee.” [inessential.com] 12:40:14 PM comment

And then Apple manipulates its users
Scott Rosenberg: "Apple found the DMCA to be a pliable tool, easily adaptable for its own ends that have nothing to do with protecting intellectual property." [Scripting News]

So, does someone want to explain why Apple thinks it is perfectly legal to burn DVDs with its hardware, but that burning DVDs on a Mac with a third-party drive goes against the DMCA? I would love to hear this explanation from Mr. Jobs...

Update: Eric Albert adds some clarification and says that Scott Rosenberg got the story wrong:

"I just wanted to point you to a note on my blog that explains why Scott Rosenberg misstated things a bit with regard to Apple's use of the DMCA against OWC. I still don't think Apple should've done what it did, but the issue isn't quite as clear-cut as it sounds."

MacResQ rolls out screen repair service
PowerBook owners who have damaged LCD screens thanks to the magnificent Apple engineering that causes the screens to rub against the keyboard keys when the case is closed now have a new repair option thanks to MacResQ's PowerBookResQ program. Today the company announced a G3 Polarizer Replacement service to fixed screens damaged by keyboard keys. At $299, the price for this service is much lower than the price for complete LCD replacement, which has previously been the only option.

MacCentral writes about the new service for Wallstreet, Lombard, and Pismo PowerBook G3 systems... 9:58:08 AM comment

Spam a-plenty is one reason to consider Mail
MacCentral cites a study today that claims Spam 'worse than ever'. Until Jaguar arrived with its new Mail client, I just deleted the Spam from my mail one post at a time, not really realizing just how much Spam I was receiving. Now I know, and I may make the full-time switch to Mail from PowerMail just because Mail has intelligent Spam-killing features. The switch won't be easy though. Mail's interface is slow, even on my Pismo with 1GB of RAM... 8:12:11 AM comment

Is Microsoft about to do something innovative?
I read with interest about the Tablet PC plans from Microsoft that were being discussed online yesterday. Glenn Fleishman noted a couple of stories on his 80211b News site yesterday: New Windows Tablet PC has Wi-Fi as only interface and Steve Outing on Starbucks and Tablet intersection.

The idea of a tablet PC has been around forever, and even Apple had developed versions of this in mock ups in years past. What I have to wonder is whether Apple is going to compete with this innovative tablet? Will this be a case where Microsoft does something first and Apple does it right? 7:36:05 AM comment

How to restore ncftp under Jaguar
Some who use the command line to use Mac OS X may have noticed that the FTP program built into Unix in OS X 10.1.5 is not there under Jaguar. Mac OS X Hints notes the problem and a simple solution in ncftp and OS X 10.2. 7:08:03 AM comment
