Apple has lots of NPR airplay today
I just got home from biking to the grocery store and back to hear minutes of Apple coverage on NPR. First, a story on Ellen Feiss, the darling of the Apple Switch ad campaign. Nothing new here other than an off beat look at the ad and its popularity. And the second piece is about the demise of the Happy Mac icon on startup into Jaguar. Sure, it is the fluff, feel good stories at the end of the news, but it was still interesting to hear...

What is wrong with iChat
I revisited the new iChat AIM client that is part of Mac OS X 10.2 this morning, to get a better feel for the options offered in the program. This time, for the first time when I have started the program it actually showed most of the AIM users online that I had seen online when running Proteus just a minute earlier. Chalk up one positive for iChat! Another thing iChat gets right is that it shows each buddy's Away message right under their icon when they are away. This is something that even AOL hasn't gotten right on its own AIM client!
Unfortunately, the limitations of the program make it less attractive for heavy-duty instant messaging users. So far I see no way to organize my buddies into sub-groups, as can be done in any other chat program. I also don't see any way to shrink the size of the huge AIM icons to the right of every name in my buddy list. Thankfully, this screen real estate waste can be removed in individual chat windows through visiting the View menu and choosing smaller icons, no icons, bubble chat or plain text. The user interface still eats tons of screen space, but it is a little more svelte with these options changed from the default.
Will I use iChat? Not until it is redesigned to work better for those who have large user lists and use chat as a part of their work routine. Power users need more options...

My first look at Inkwell and Ink
Out of curiousity, I plugged in the Wacom Intuos graphics tablet I bought for Natalie a year or so ago into my PowerBook and downloaded the latest alpha version driver for Mac OS X in order to take a look at the handwriting recognition capabilities of Ink and Inkwell under Jaguar. After 20-30 minutes of playing around, I am both intrigued and frustrated - intrigued to see that there is some functionality there and frustrated that I simply couldn't get Ink to work well for me. I am not sure if it is because of the driver I downloaded or simply a lack of skill on my part.
Has anyone else found Ink usable yet?

Once more testing Mail
A reader tip helped me make my Mail installation work much quicker, and so I am giving the program my week-long try that I had originally planned. What was the tip? Simple...turn off HTML mail. The reader's theory, which seems to have some merit, is that Mail is constantly polling slow Web servers to grab images and other items in HTML mail, which could be causing the slow display of each and every message that I was seeing yesterday.
I prefer to avoid HTML mail anyway, for security reasons (I don't like my email client loading anything from the Web) as well as because text-only mail has the greatest possible compatibility with other email clients from around the world.
Expect more about my Mail experimentation as the week drags on...
