Jaguar begins arriving
Amidst news of delays on some Jaguar shipments, select users who have ordered Mac OS X 10.2 directly from Apple are reporting that they have received Jaguar and are doing their upgrades this afternoon. Andy Smith sent the following to MNJ this afternoon:
"I received my copy of Jaguar today! I ordered from the Apple (for Education) store, with two day shipping. I hope to install it tonight, if I have time."
There should be more meaningful feedback on the upgrade experience and any software or hardware incompatibilities as users start to receive and install Jaguar. Meanwhile, I will be calling my local CompUSA store tomorrow to find out whether I can get a fresh copy of Mac OS X 10.2 there on Saturday morning and what time they will open in the morning...

Mozilla problem with Jaguar fixed
The Java issues formerly reported with the Mozilla Web browser running under Mac OS X 10.2 have apparently been fixed in the latest available nightly builds of the browser, according to some already running Jaguar with Mozilla. This is great news! And the speed with which the problem was fixed points out the advantage of an open-source development model. The problem was noted, solved, and released to users in a matter of days. Now that is customer service!

One ISP's story with the MPAA
Chuck Goolsbee from Digital Forest, the ISP that hosts Mac Net Journal and my other business site for White Rabbit Publishing, posted an interesting note yesterday to the TidBITS Talk mailing list about the MPAA going after his business to shut down an individual user who is sharing "Simpsons" material through Gnutella while connected to Digital Forest.Chuck raises two great legal questions: Can he bill the MPAA for the time in taking action on its behalf? And will he be reimbursed for any lost revenue if he shuts down the offending user? As a Digital Forest user, I worry about the invasion of privacy presented by this enforcement action, as well as about the economic costs of enforcement being passed down to those users who, like me, are not sharing copyright protected materials to the world through a Digital Forest account...

GraphicConverter 4.4.4 adds new features
GraphicConverter 4.4.4 (Updated 8/22/02) - ($30 shareware) The Swiss Army Knife of graphics programs adds support for exporting directly to Toast in the browser contextual menu, an updated user manual, support for the JPEG 2000 export format on Mac OS X with QuickTime 6 and a host of other enhancements and bug fixes. If you can't afford Photoshop, get this program. I use it extensively with my digital photos, and since I stopped using iPhoto three or four months ago, it is also my photo storage and organization tool of choice. I simply cannot say enough nice things about this program.
