To upgrade or buy new...the eternal question
As a long-time PowerBook user who has made the progression through two PowerBook 3400c models, a svelte PowerBook 2400c, and now my current Pismo PowerBook (PowerBook 2000 FireWire or some lame name...), today I found myself facing a common question for laptop owners: To upgrade the machine or to buy a newer model. My decision today was a cop out - I spent less than $200 to buy 1 gig of RAM for my Pismo PowerBook, which will be a serious shot in the arm after working with OS X with 192MB of RAM since I first got this machine and installed the Mac OS X Public Beta in October of 2000. I'm sure I will like the little boost of extra speed, and it is the least costly of the upgrade options that had me wondering about a 14-inch iBook...

osOpinion urges Apple to leave the hardware biz
Apple: Time for a Switch. Rumors of the demise of the PPC and Apple's impending switch to x86 architecture are
circulating everywhere. While I am personally saddened that the G5 will likely never
see the light of day, this is decision time for Apple. What decision? That it is time
to get out of the hardware business. [osOpinion]

Wow...thanks for the endorsement!
Donated to Mac Net Journal. I donated $20 to Mac Net Journal today. Rob’s doing a great job with this site—his weblog has become my primary site for Mac news. So what’s $20 to help keep Mac Net Journal going? A large pizza and some cokes or a couple pitchers of beer. It’s totally worth it. [inessential.com]
Thanks Brent, for the kind words and the donation! And also a quick thanks since I see that Mac Net Journal's results are showing up correctly in your excellent NetNewsWire Lite application this morning. I am not sure what was wrong, but it is working correctly now!

Setting up a power-friendly computing solution
Macintouch points out an interesting article this morning from Home Power Magazine, an interesting magazine with technical details and examples of people around the world who provide power to their homes and offices with solar, wind, or small application hydro power sources. The article Efficient computing and wireless Internet by John Bertrand digs into the issue of buying a power-friendly computer and setting up and off-the-grid Internet access and computing system that is always available yet still easy on power use.
The article does focus on using a Windows laptop from Dell, but the author also notes the wattage use of an Apple iBook, which is by far the most power-friendly of the current Apple laptops. In fact, because of these kinds of power issues, I have considered selling my Pismo PowerBook and buying one of the new 14-inch iBook machines with their better battery life and G3 processor that can be found at 700 MHz compared to the 400 MHz G3 in my aging laptop. I don't live off the grid, but alternative power is definitely an interest and minimizing my own power consumption is something I try to do as a general principle.
The article by Mr. Bertrand also offers some interesting details about the wireless broadband connection he runs to access the Internet.
I should also note that MacSlash had an interesting discussion underway yesterday related to the TiBook and its power requirements in an off-the-grid situation: TiBook power consumption.
Do you do anything with your computing solution to minimize power use? Do you sleep your computer at night? Do you minimize how many electronic devices are plugged into your power system to stop issues like fantom loads?
A couple of things I do to minimize power use: I have started sleeping my Pismo Powerbook at night, we only use laptop computers on a daily basis (we do fire up our PowerComputing Mac clone to do specific tasks like running our scanner or the Nikon slide scanner I have on loan), and I also listen to music and my favorite public radio station through iTunes rather than on the stereo...
