OpenOffice for OS X Alpha arrives
OpenOffice for Mac OS X Goes Alpha. OpenOffice.org has announced an alpha release of the Mac OS X version of its open source
office suite. While the software is not a final release, according to OpenOffice.org,
the organization presented it as an important milestone in the effort to create free
office productivity software that runs on all major platforms. [osOpinion]
The software doesn't run on a standard OS X installation yet. It runs under X11, which runs under OS X...

An alternative to .Mac spending
If you have $100 burning a hole in your pocket and you would prefer not to spend it on Apple's .Mac service, the people at The Omni Group are offering a bargain alternative special that ends today. Omni offers its Omni Productivity Bundle, including OmniGraffle, OmniWeb, OmniOutliner and OmniDiskSweeper today for $99.95 - exactly the same price as .Mac. Omni is also offering specials on individual products today, including $5 off on licenses for OmniOutliner (which I finally purchased a few minutes ago), OmniWeb, and OmniDiskSweeper. A tutorial for Apple Backup for OS X 1.0
Brad Hopkins has written a tutorial for using the new Backup for OS X program that is part of Apple's .Mac application suite.
An interesting line from the article:
"A .Mac membership is required for all Users on your system. User A cannot use Backup with User B's .Mac account."
