Another perspective in the post-Macworld daze
Low End Mac today includes a column from the self-appointed Mac curmudgeon, Eric Schwarz: Jaguar overpriced for X users, and .mac undermines my faith in Apple.
There are a lot of long-time Mac users out there who are disappointed and disheartened with the way Apple is treating its customers. I am among them. Yes, Apple is running a business and they have to make money to survive, but the move to charge the same price for someone upgrading to OS X 10.2, or Jaguar, as someone buying into the operating system for the first time is a slap in the face of early adopters. Even Microsoft offers better support of its long-time customers than this...
That being said, I will surely plunk down $129 per computer to bring my machines that are capable of running OS X 10.2 up to the new version. The new features are too much to ignore the update. But I have decided that Apple doesn't deserve $49 for the "upgrade" to .Mac service. I never used iTools much, I don't even feel comfortable to backing up my files across the Internet to an online server that is just waiting for someone to care enough to hack it, and from what I have seen of Apple's new Backup program that is bundled with .Mac service, it is not a complete backup solution by any means. I have no desire to just give away money to Apple...
