Yes to Webcasts, no to fair use
Copies, Webcasts tangled in draft bill. Key House legislators propose a bill that would give a minor boost to Webcasters but limit Americans' rights related to copying music or transferring files. [CNET News.com]

As this article states, if approved, it could make it illegal to tape a TV show and then loan that tape to a friend. In short, this is not a good trade off... 5:14:43 PM comment

Warchalking in the New York Times
Road Signs for Vagabond Computer Users. In "war chalking," a series of symbols on sidewalks and buildings indicate the presence of a wireless network. By Glenn Fleishman. [New York Times: International]

I still detest the term "warchalking," but it seems to have stuck to this movement that in a lot of ways seems more like a cool idea than reality... 2:37:41 PM comment

Can we trust Microsoft? Um...probably not
Salon asks: Can we trust Microsoft's Palladium? Could Palladium function as a kind of technological straitjacket, a Redmond-operated remote control over your data and, in consequence, your life? According to those who've looked closely at the proposal, the answer is a definite, unhelpful "maybe." But the better question is this: Why would Microsoft want to build such a restrictive system? A change in the Yahoo Messenger chat protocol?
For some reason over the last couple of days I cannot connect to the Yahoo Messenger chat network using Fire. It worked great until two days ago...but now I have to run the OS X version of the Yahoo Messenger client. My chat life is getting cluttered...

I do notice though that a third beta version of Proteus X 2.0 has been released today. It rolls out a number of bug fixes, but I am still not sure if Proteus can serve my needs since the last time I used it there was no support for group chats under the AOL Instant Messenger protocol.

Some people may wonder why chat programs get so much attention in Mac Net Journal. The answer is pretty simple, really. Since 1994 I have worked from home as a telecommuter and freelancer, and instant messenging is a key link in the communication chain for people who make a living working from home offices across the country. 10:19:14 AM comment

Mac 'browser-share' grows at O'Reilly
The O'Reilly Networks' Derrick Story posted an item on July 5 that is interesting. In Browser numbers on the rise, Story notes that the number of Mac browsers hitting the O'Reilly site has nearly doubled from a year ago. His conclusion: The growing developer interest in OS X reflected in the browser numbers could be good news for the Mac. 10:09:22 AM comment
