Off to Protection Island
It didn't feel like July today as Natalie and I joined with her parents and other passengers on a six-hour cruise to Protection Island. We saw about 15 bird species through the rain and under a threatening sky, which can be seen in the photo I include here. Protection Island is a wildlife refuge sitting all alone in the waters of the Strait of Juan de Fuca - the long inland passage that connects the Pacific Ocean to the west and Puget Sound to the east and that draws the international border between the U.S. and Canada. The island is home to thousands of nesting birds - Rhinocerous Auklet, Pigeon Guillemot, Tufted Puffin, Double-crested and Pelagic Cormorants - which is the reason we are making it one of the 100 birdwatching sites in Birding Washington.
We saw all of these birds and more during our trip. Now, back home and worn out...time to recharge for a few hours before another week begins tomorrow...
