eWeek: Can Apple stop the presses?
eWeek takes a look at news about Apple pulling press passes for Web sites that report what are deemed to be rumors in the eyes of the Apple police. My thoughts: While interesting, this really shouldn't be unexpected. Apple and every other company wants to control how they are promoted in the media. And with Steve Jobs at the helm at Apple, there is even more micromanagement of Apple's image going on. If anything, this is a validation of Mac Web sites as a viable news source and possible thorn in the side of the same company that all of us care about enough to cover and write about every day.
I can understand the frustration of Scott McCarty at GraphicPower, who says he is stopping publication of his site and never buying another Mac after being black-listed by Apple. He rightly feels betrayed by Apple and his description of the incident should be required reading for those who write about Apple.
I still have no plans to turn MNJ into a rumor site. I will continue to be critical and point out problems I see with OS X and Apple strategies as time goes on, but I like to stick to the real world rather than being proven wrong every time Macworld Expo rolls along, when the inane predictions turn out to be worthless.
