Details about Newer Technology's G4/500 upgrade for Pismos
As it turns out, Other World Computing has a page with information about Newer Technology's G4 processor upgrade for PowerBook G3 FireWire machines, better known as the Pismo. The upgrade is similar to the PowerLogix upgrade announced earlier today - a G4 chip running at 500 MHz - and the upgrade process will require sending your PowerBook to Newer Technology to install the processor. Like the PowerLogix upgrade, Newer Technology's upgrade costs $299.95 (although the price for the PowerLogix upgrade goes up after an introductory special price of $299.95).

Confirmation: Yesterday was the warmest since 1998
A little weather note: Yesterday's high temperature, which reached 92 here in Tacoma, was the highest temperature in this area of Western Washington since July of 1998. It is not nearly so hot today - in the 60s with a few sprinkles falling.
Of course, this weekend we will be in Eastern Washington, watching birds and dealing with high temperatures in the 80s and 90s. Good times...

Scheduler: An all-in-one automator for the Mac
Scheduler v3.2 Build 207. - Scheduler is a scheduling utility for appointments, launching applications, documents and AppleScripts. It is also able to trigger the download of web pages and files in many browsers. It features many scheduling options that other scheduling utilities do not offer. Scheduler is able to record and import sounds, such as iTunes tracks or your favorite game's sounds. [release notes] [AppleScript Info]
This looks like a really useful utility - one that I could see serving a number of purposes for business users and home users alike. I plan to check this program out in the near future...

The first G4 upgrade for Pismo PowerBooks arrives
MacNN notes that PowerLogix has announced a G4 upgrade for 'Pismo' PowerBooks that will bump the G3-based PowerBook to a 500MHz G4 machine. Priced at $300, this is a fairly small speed upgrade, but it will give owners of older PowerBooks (such as mine, a Pismo G3 400Mhz) a way to stick with their machine while adding the advanced multi-tasking and graphics capabilities of a G4 processor.
This is the first processor upgrade for the machine Apple officially calls the PowerBook G3 FireWire, but it may not be the last. The revived Newer Technology company has announced a desire to create a G4 upgrade for the Pismo as well, though details about the speed of that upgrade are not available just yet.

Yesterday evening was a great time for nature watching. On the heels of a 92 degree day here - probably the hottest day in a couple of years - things started to get interesting around 4 p.m. when I realized that the caterpillar we gathered last weekend on our butterfly trip had gone into its "J" form, hanging from a Nettle leaf in preparation for forming the chrysalis and transforming into a butterfly. Then at 6 p.m. I was out filling the bird feeders and an out-of-place black-and-orange butterfly flew past me - a Monarch. I was excited to see the Monarch, the first I have seen in our yard, but also skeptical since Monarchs are not normal in Western Washington. Most likely, this butterfly was released from a local school that, like many schools, raised Monarchs and released them without considering that they cannot stay alive here.
The photo I've included here is of the chrysalis we are watching at home. In a couple of days, it will be a butterfly!
