To end the night on a somber note...
Faint Hope for Survival of a Woodpecker Fades. Computer analysis of recordings of a tapping sound heard by a team searching for the perhaps extinct ivory-billed woodpecker revealed that the sound was distant gunshots, not the bird. By James Gorman. [New York Times: Science] 10:42:58 PM comment

There is a rift? Who forgot to tell me?
NY Times: A Rift Among Bloggers. It's a nice article. Everyone likes each other. Coool. [Scripting News]

I have been reading and mostly trying to ignore the latest slew of notes about a rift between warbloggers and techbloggers, but since the New York Times has now weighed in with this article, I have to ask...who the hell cares? People write Weblogs and run Web sites about things they like and I see no need for an old guard and a new guard to get all worked up because the Weblog world is changing and growing more relevant in the real world outside of venture capital meetings and one technology conference after another. It's simple...people write about what they care about. Who cares if Weblogs are becoming more political? In my opinion, the world could use more informed, intelligent discussion about politics instead of the polarized crap that the mainstream media wants to feed us every day.

Will this be a breakthrough for wireless networks?
80211b News writes: John Markoff describes a quiet, inexpensive startup, Etherlinx, that plans to change the face of the final mile. Markoff details how two innovators a few doors down from Apple's historic garage are taking off-the-shelf Wi-Fi cards, installing their own firmware, and producing CPE (customer premises equipment) devices for less than $100. The dual-radio design allows them to run a long-distance high-bandwidth connection relayed to a local Wi-Fi network. What's unique about this product is that it's a single device and it's cheap. You can assemble equipment like this for $500 to $1000 using telco-grade systems, or you can cobble it together for much less, but still a few hundred dollars and a fair amount of configuration and some supporting devices. More information as it appears.

Apple ad campaign features converts from Windows

Give us news that matters
Robert Scoble goes after the fat cats and the newspaper editors who think that they are relevant today. As Dave Winer puts it: "Scoble is on fire today. Way to go Robert!" 7:00:35 PM comment

And then there were butterflies...
A picture named grayhairstreak.jpg

We ventured a few miles west of home today for the culminating field trip for our recent butterfly class, and this time the weather cooperated, bringing out the sunshine and at least 17 different species of butterflies - including the Gray Hairstreak in this photo. Other butterflies we saw included three swallowtails (Western Tiger, Pale, and Anise), Brown Elfin, Bramble Green Hairstreak, Mylitta Crescent, Spring Azure, Lourquin's Admiral, Clodius Parnasian, Silvery Blue, tons of Western Meadow Fritillary, Persius Duskywing, Silver Spotted Skipper, Margined White, Western Pine Elfin, and a host of Purplish Copper. In other words, it was a pretty good day to geek on butterflies. 6:46:27 PM comment
