OmniWeb 5.0 coming in 2003
MacNN notes that after reading a recent news article they found that the OmniWeb 5.0 release is slated for early 2003. From my reading on the OmniWeb mailing list, work is underway on enhancements to the yet-to-be-released OmniWeb 4.1, which is due tomorrow, and even though work will start on OmniWeb 5.0 soon, there are likely to be more incremental updates to the browser between now and then. So, it sounds like we can expect more 4.x releases in the near future. 11:24:00 PM comment

On summer nights, Mac news is not the only focus
A picture named woodduck.jpg

On Thursday nights Natalie and I have been making the trek a few miles south of home to help do radio monitoring for a group of Western Pond Turtles in a wildlife area, and tonight between listening to the blips of the radio transmitters for the turtles we saw some great wildlife on an overcast summer evening. One example is the male Wood Duck that I caught trying to hide in the reeds in one of the small ponds. These medium sized ducks are abundant around Puget Sound country in the summer months.

I took tonight's shot using our aging (2 year old and nearly 6000 photos taken) Nikon CoolPix 950 digital camera, which I held up to our Swift spotting scope to shoot through the eye piece for a close up.

Now, back to the Mac news. Sometimes my enthusiasm for the natural world and photography just gets the best of me... 10:23:49 PM comment

Weblog Poster 1.2: A new name for posting tool
Will Leschner offers a new version of his weblog posting tool, Weblog Poster 1.2. As descibed on his site:
Weblog Poster (formerly Radio Poster) posts messages to a weblog that supports either the Blogger API or the MetaWeblog API. To post a message, simply create a new window, fill in the server information, compose the message, and post it. A substitution glossary makes it easy to add links to a message. Just drag a link to the glossary field of a message, name the link, and then refer to the link in a message with the name enclosed in double-quotes. Weblog Poster automatically performs the link substitution when posting the message. There is also a persistent global glossary that is shared among all messages. Weblog Poster supports message drafts and message editing. Before a message is posted, it can be saved for later editing and posting. After a message is posted, it can be saved, edited, and reposted.

New in this version:

  • Support for multiple weblogs with a favorites window.
  • Better copy & paste to and from glossaries.
  • Better drag & drop to and from glossaries.
  • Support for copy & paste while editing glossary entries.
Weblog Poster 1.2 is freeware. 5:10:56 PM comment

Add me to the list of folks who like Silk
I mentioned the release of Silk from Unsanity yesterday, which offers font smoothing in any Carbon application under OS X 10.1.5, but I didn't start using it until today. In short, this is a great little addition to OS X. If you like font smoothing, which can especially be useful on an LCD screen, then you should grab this highly customizable freeware.

A nice touch is the ability to exclude selected applications from font smoothing based on your own preferences. 12:40:32 PM comment

A threat to 802.11b seems to have faded
80211b News notes: Got Sirius: David Sifry reports via Carl Stevenson, an IEEE group chair that Sirius has withdrawn their petition on the issue of out-of-band emissions from the 2.4 GHz band. This is a good development. Had Sirius succeeded, the impact would have been forward directed -- older devices would have been unaffected -- but the costs were unknown.

Consumers sue the Bigs for limits to fair use
Glenn Fleishman, a well known tech writer, Wi-Fi maven and Seattle resident posted this morning: Thursday: I Accuse. This morning, the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) on behalf of myself and four other plaintiffs filed a lawsuit against a group of media companies which had themselves sued Sonic Blue, Inc., and ReplayTV, Inc. The full information is here . This lawsuit is a stand against the erosion of fair use. As a ReplayTV 4000 series owner, I have joined the suit in the interests of all individuals' fair use rights. "There really isn't an opportunity for the consumers voice to be heard in these cases," is what one of the attorneys, Robin Gross said this morning ... [GlennLog]

I don't have much to add here other than kudos to Glenn for jumping into the fray on this issue. It is about time that the voices of consumers are included in the debate about fair use and digital rights. 12:18:45 PM comment

Mulberry email client updated to 3.0a2
Cyrusoft International has unveiled a new alpha version of its email client, Mulberry 3.0a2, offering a new optional 3-pane mail browser layout, support for processing read receipt requests and a host of other user interface enhancements and bug fixes.

The move to a new user interface and a 3-pane mail browser alone could be enough to make Mulberry a more useful email tool. 11:37:44 AM comment

OS X Update Combo 10.1.5
Mark Pilgrim noted this morning and Macintouch posted a bit later that in addition to the standard upgrade to OS X 10.1.5 offered through the Software Update panel in System Preferences, Apple offers a combo update that makes it easy to move from OS X 10.1, 10.1.1 or 10.1.2 without jumping through as many hoops. Read the AppleCare Knowledge Base document for more information. 11:11:18 AM comment

The Great OS X Browser Shootout
Low End Mac offers its Great OS X Browser Shootout today, opening up front with the author admitting that he has a bias toward iCab X 2.8. Just as my own reviews of the OS X Web browsers have been largely subjective, this review relies as much on perception as it does on numbers to back up its conclusions. Still, it makes an interesting read... 10:47:49 AM comment
