Virtual workspace application Space.app updated to 0.8
Space.app 0.8 is a freeware program that allows users to set up virtual workspaces under OS X, much as Linux and Unix users are familiar with as part of the user interface under those OSes. This is the first update to Space.app since April 2001. 3:29:15 PM comment

CNET takes a look at QuickTime 6
Apple backs MPEG-4 despite fee dispute. The company previews QuickTime 6 with the next-generation compression technology, declining to wait for final terms of a controversial licensing plan. [CNET News.com]

I am holding off installing QuickTime 6 Public Preview on my OS X machine because it is such a short-lived public beta that will expire in October and I have no desire to mess around with this particular beta software right yet. My advice: Hold off installing this update until things shake out for a few days... 3:12:25 PM comment

Dave Winer teases new Radio Outliner capabilities
Dave Winer writes about his vision of a new tool he calls My Weblog Outliner that will help make the outlining capabilities of Radio 8 even more useful. I can't get it fast enough. I have stopped using Radio's outliner very much once the Instant Outliner functions stopped working.

I still find the outliner useful for maintaining what I call living documents, like my ongoing OS X Applications Ranked By Category. 3:08:17 PM comment

Why are books like this even being published?
I notice today that the Macinstein Web site offer a press release for a new book called Handpicked Software for Mac OS X, a book that looks at the best commercial, shareware and freeware software for OS X. What I wonder is why in the hell any publisher would put out a printed book like this that covers a topic where it is out of date before it even goes to print. Have we learned nothing from the last few years? Why not create a PDF-based book or a password protected Web site where people could subscribe to read actual up-to-date information about OS X software, rather than dated materials about software that has surely changed since the book went to the printer?

I also have this same beef with technology magazines. With the exception of some hardware reviews, most magazines are out of date by the time they arrive at the magazine stand. And rather than focussing on the things that are timeless, like tips and in-depth articles that cannot be duplicated so easily online by Weblogs and other more timely news sources, the media in many of its forms continues to act like the Internet and the age of instant information doesn't exist... 9:40:53 AM comment
