Some background on the Chimera browser
Forwarding Address: OS X notes:
David Hyatt, lead developer on the Chimera web browser project, has posted an interesting explanation on the complexity of marrying the gecko rendering engine (the guts that power Mozilla, Netscape, and now Chimera) to the Cocoa UI that makes it look so incredible. He also explains why the name Chimera was chosen. Slightly technical but very interesting if you're into this sort of thing.

Who is in my Weblog Neighborhood?
I installed the tools to start using the new Weblog Neighborhood, blogrolling and other macros in Radio 8.0.8 this afternoon. I am still unsure how useful this will be for MNJ readers, but it is a pretty interesting little tool nonetheless...
If you want to see who is in my Weblog Neighborhood, check it out.

Beware before updating to Office v. X. with Service Release 1
From Mark Pilgrim's Dive into Mark: Microsoft Office X SP1 is out. Microsoft Office v. X, Service Release 1. 1000 bug fixes, still no Exchange integration. (Microsoft is still trying to decide how it wants to tackle that issue. How about fixing it?)
Also, Macintouch, MacFixit, and others are reporting that installing the service pack will wipe out your registration information and force you to dig up your original install CD and re-enter the CD key, which apparently doesn't always work. And if you upgraded from Office 2001, you'll have to dig up that CD, too. Lovely. [dive into mark]

A "high speed" 512MB CompactFlash card from Lexar
MacCentral notes that Lexar has added a 512MB CompactFlash card to 'High Speed' line. I use a couple of standard Lexar CompactFlash cards in my digital photography, and they are reliable - more so than some of the other digital media I have picked up. But it is up to the individual to consider if the reliability and extra speed of these cards is worth the higher price tag.
This new 512MB card is priced at $375, and you will only be able to take advantage of the higher speed features of the card if your camera supports higher speed transfers.

Microsoft rolls out an update to Office v. X
Office v. X, Service Release 1. - This update is a collection of product updates for all Office v. X programs. It provides Office v. X customers with the latest fixes as well as several new features. It is not a required upgrade but Microsoft recommends it for Office v. X users. With 'more than 1,000 performance improvements, updates, and fixes' claimed, I was surprised to find no AppleScript related changes on the 'What's New' page. [AppleScript Info]

I am still investigating these new features to see how I will implement them on Mac Net Journal. I may have the time to figure out what this will mean for MNJ readers later today...

Another great weekend of camping and nature
I'm back and playing catchup after a weekend camping in the mountains on Eastern Washington. Lots of great scenery and fairly rare birds, and Natalie and I accompllished more research for our upcoming book!
The photo I include today is of a trio of checkerspot butterflies that were gathered in a damp area along a stream through Wenas Basin in the eastern foothills of the Cascade Mountains. I think these are Hoffman's Checkerspots, though they may be Northern Checkerspots. Either way, what a great weekend for birding and butterfly watching. In all, we saw more than 100 bird species and at least 14 butterfly species!
Now back to our regularly scheduled programming...
