Just how well does Bluetooth work with the Mac?

Glenn Fleishman comments - Palm synching with a Bluetooth card: I failed to mention my own article in the Seattle Times about Palm synchronization (and its failings) in general, and Palm synchronization (and its success) using the Apple Bluetooth software, Palm Bluetooth Card, and D-Link Bluetooth USB Adapter for Macs running OS X 10.1.

Wi-Fi keeps growing, despite its quirks
802.11b: "It's been more than a year since home users started buying Wi-Fi in huge amounts, and the software cycle still shows an orientation towards the techiest-of-the-techie. And even we can't figure it out."  [Scripting News] 4:07:16 PM comment

OmniOutliner as a script management tool
OmniOutliner as a Script Analysis and Management Tool. Studio Log: “Analyzing and managing programming code is a tough task in the best of circumstances. This article explores using OmniOutliner as a script analysis and management tool and, through extensibility with adding AppleScripts to the Scripts Menu, using OmniOutliner as a script editor.” [ranchero.com] 10:19:30 AM comment

What OS X Web browser are you using?
OS X offers more browser choices than ever before for Mac users. Which OS X browser are you using the most? Send me your take on current browsers through the Comment link or e-mail me... Click here to send an email to the editor of this weblog.

Some initial feedback:

Michael writes:
My preferences for OSX browsers are:

  • 1. OmniWeb
  • 2. iCab
  • 3. Internet Explorer
I use Internet Explorer only for sites where the other two do not work. iCab would go to #1 if it could do font smoothing.

Ed adds:
I use OmniWeb first as well and Internet Explorer as a backup. I only wish OmniWeb's development cycle would speed up. I tried Chimera and was blown away by the speed. Why can't OmniWeb provide this speed?

And Dan Knight from Low End Mac adds:
My preferences, although I do find my self actually using IE more often than the others.

  • 1. OmniWeb for its beauty. Every browser should look this good.
  • 2. iCab for its speed and ease of turning off ads.
  • 3. Mozilla because it doesn't come from MS. Coming along very nicely.
  • 4. IE for its compatibility. Sometimes only IE works. Too often, unforunately. (C'mon, webmasters, don't write code that only works right with one browser.)

Apple updates its iBook line
As was widely expected, Apple announced a new 700MHz iBook today. The new models - including a 14-inch LCD model and two smaller 12-inch LCD models - continue to feature G3 processors but with larger level 2 caches, an upgraded ATI Mobility Radeon graphics card and a new video-out port that supports VGA, S-Video and composite video (with an included adapter). The high-end 14-inch LCD model is listed at $1,799 and the 12-inch LCD models are $1,499 (for the 700MHz version) and $1,199 (for a 600MHz version).

Although this is a sizable bump in the processor speed and video capabilities of the iBook, and there are larger hard drives included in the low-cost machines, power users should take notice that the new video out capabilities only allow video mirroring. So there will be no dual monitor capabilities for this machine out of the box.

MacSlash has a discussion underway about the new models, with people commenting that the iBook still doesn't offer a G4 processor, among other issues. 8:00:11 AM comment
