Doc Searls offers a common rant about the OS X Print Center
Doc Searls hits a sore spot today writing about his problems dealing with the Print Center under OS X. I agree with his analysis...it is a real weak spot in Apple's system software, and it is way behind the implementation of the print center under OS 9.x Personally, I haven't been bothered by it much since I tend to do so little printing, and I use just one printer under OS X - an aging Epson ink-jet printer. If I have a real big printing job to do, I offload the file to the old Power Computing machine on our network and let it do the printing on either our antique LaserWriter or the Epson...

A reader comments on the AppleWorks outliner
Dave Rogers commented on the capabilities of the built-in AppleWorks outliner: The outliner in AppleWorks is a bit more robust than you may think. I haven't used these features lately, but I believe they are still present. You can embed a frame in a sub-heading. For instance, you can have a spreadsheet as a subheading, and when you collapse the parent heading, the spreadsheet disappears. Same thing with drawings and charts. I haven't tried the tables feature in 6.x as an object in a sub-heading, but I'm pretty sure it'll work as well. You can also embed links to other documents, web pages, etc in the outline. Handy for organizing things. In version 5.x, it still supported Publish and Subscribe, so you could clone topics and when you updated the publisher, it updated all the editions in the outline. Publish and subscribe is gone in 6.x, so I'm not sure you can have that functionality short of replicating it as some kind of script using Applescript.

More thoughts on OS X e-mail applications
The obsession with finding a perfect e-mail solution under OS X continues - not just in my home office but elsewhere around the Net. Forwarding Address: OS X has some notes about e-mail options, as well as a mail horror story dealing with Entourage. Included in the Entourage horror story are some important notes from a Microsoft support person that are critical if you use that program for your e-mail: * If you want to archive 100,000 messages, don't use Entourage. Run Outlook under OS9 (ugh, you're kidding me, right?). Entourage isn't intended for heavy use. * The behavior Entourage exhibited is totally inexplicable. * Before rebuilding a database in Entourage, duplicate your Main Identity dir and throw out the Database Cache file. That way, you can switch between the two spools using "Switch Identity." * Your most recent messages are the most likely source of sudden corruption in your mail database, and therefore most prone to being deleted during a rebuild. The author is considering a move back to Eudora after the problem, which caused him to temporarily lose about 300 critical e-mails...

Link rot is not just a problem for businesses
Rotten Links Hamper Learning. Thousands of Web pages disappear regularly despite the ongoing growth of the Internet. Researchers say 'link rot' is a serious problem that could hinder online as well as offline courses. By Kendra Mayfield and Katie Dean. [Wired News]
As the maintainer of a number of Web sites, I can attest to the value of keeping links - even links to old information - alive and well. It can be a painstaking job to ensure links are working, but it is worth the effort to do as much as you can in that arena.
