One major shortfall of the newest version of the Proteus chat program
I spent some time this morning trying out Proteus 1.6.1b4, the latest version of the multi-protocol chat program from Alien Technology. This new incarnation offers a lot of fun features that are sure to be enjoyable to a lot of users - a slew of new graphical emoticons, customizable user interface tweaks, etc. But so far Proteus is missing one critical feature: group chat. Until this capability is added to the program, I can't use it...

Overall, if you don't need the group chat capability, I highly recommend taking a look at Proteus. Hopefully there are more improvements just around the corner! 2:02:44 PM comment

Tips for fixing DOCTYPE settings on Web pages
Fixing Your Site with the Right Doctype. A List Apart: “You’ve written valid XHTML and CSS. You’ve used the W3C standard Document Object Model (DOM) to manipulate dynamic page elements. Yet, in browsers designed to support these very standards, your site is failing. A faulty DOCTYPE is likely to blame.” [ranchero.com] 1:29:08 PM comment

For those digging into the new SOAP connection with Google
Google glue for: PHP, Ruby. More here [Scripting News]

I have not set up a Google box on Mac Net Journal yet because, while I find it cool, I don't see how it will help my readers at this point. I try to focus MNJ on things that will help maximize the use of OS X. So, if I see the light and figure out a way that a Google box may help MNJ's readers, I will consider adding one to the site... 12:37:58 PM comment

A useful article from Wired: Getting Paid on the Internet
Webmonkey: “Several companies have developed payment systems that you can use either on a one-off basis, as a subscriber, or as a full-fledged credit merchant. Each service has its advantages and hang-ups, which is just what we’ll be looking at as we examine a variety of services in the pages that follow.” [ranchero.com]

It looks like I have some reading to do... 12:24:43 PM comment

Dive into OS X moves to its own domain
Mark Pilgrim re-announced his Dive into OS X Web site and the availability of a downloadable OS X FAQ that should aid new users of the operating system as well as veteran OS X users (does using a new operating system for more than a year make you a veteran?). The Web site and FAQ are compiled from student questions and answers from Mark's Apple Training Courses. 9:17:57 AM comment

Free e-mail has always come at a cost...now it is just more tangible
Rising Costs of Free Web E-Mail. Though slow and unreliable, at least those Web-based e-mail services such as Hotmail and Yahoo are free. But the trend is toward charging for services, which is spawning a new breed of smaller, leaner Web-based mail sites. By Farhad Manjoo. [Wired News]

In my work with clients and volunteer groups I seldom advise they rely on free e-mail services as their main contact, and the costs being added to many of these services are another reason to opt for real e-mail rather than Web-based services.

So, what does these developments with free e-mail have to do with Macs? Well, Mac.com e-mail is another of the free services. So far I haven't heard any rumbles of premium or pay services being tied to Mac.com mail. 8:52:42 AM comment
