Updated Java plug-in brings better performance to Mozilla
This afternoon the programmers creating a better Java plug-in for Mozilla unveiled MRJ Java Plugin Carbon 1.0b2, and in my quick testing it performs much better under Mozilla 0.9.9 on OS X than the previous version. The big improvement - it nearly works with the Java pages I need to use on the Lycos Communities pages for my work.

I wouldn't be so excited that it almost works, except that now even IE fails to work with the Java pages on Lycos, ever since Apple changed the Java components in OS X in the latest update a few weeks ago. For me to work with the Java chat client on Lycos with a Mac, I have to use the old version of IE under Classic... 4:39:09 PM comment

OmniOutliner and OPML
Dave notes on Scripting News that Tim Jarrett is bridging OmniOutliner and OPML.

I'm glad I caught this note, not only because I am interested in OmniOutliner, but also because I need to keep an eye on Tim Jarrett's Web page. He offers some interesting insight into scripting and most recently into using CSS in redesigning his site. 1:32:07 PM comment

This could have a HUGE impact on Wi-Fi

Internetnews.com reports on a potential FCC ruling limiting 2.4 GHz radiated signal: this is the most frightening development to hit Wi-Fi in its history. If the attempt by satellite radio firm Sirius succeeds, public space, wISP, and community Wi-Fi could suffer crushing blows.

A brief site note
I have disabled some of the new Radio 8 macros that I was trying on Mac Net Journal this week - most notably the Google It link. I fail to see the utility of that feature outweighing the clutter that it adds to the page. 10:40:23 AM comment

60 gigs in a PowerBook
The PowerPage has a drool-worthy short story from Steve Fry about installing and working with a 60 gig hard drive in a Pismo PowerBook. The author upgrades from a loud Travelstar HD, the same size as the drive in my Pismo that drones on with plenty of drive noise, and he finds that in addition to the extra storage space, he finds the sound level a lot lower with the 60 gig drive. The switch isn't cheap, though... 10:12:01 AM comment

Writing in Mozilla
Jon Udell has written a good piece about the state of Mozilla with this 0.9.9 release, and he thinks the program is nearly there as an all-in-one writing tool. I tend to agree with most of what he says, but there are still shortcomings. At least under OS X, Mozilla needs to integrate with the OS and use tools like on-the-fly spell checking. And of course, as I always harp on this point, it needs to offer full Java support under OS X... 9:43:04 AM comment

The most popular OS X add-ons
As we approach the one-year mark since the unveiling of Mac OS X 10.0, many Mac sites are looking back and trying to summarize the last year. MacSlash has the second discussion in a series about OS X one year later underway today in One Year of Mac OS X: Mac Fu. The discussion takes a look at people's favorite OS X add-on utilities and shortcuts for making OS X more personalized.

In a similar vein, the TidBITS-Talk mailing list has had a great substantive thread over the last couple of weeks about Top OS X Utilities. 9:31:58 AM comment

More on the copy protection debate
Tim O'Reilly on the copy protection debate in Washington.  Where is Microsoft?  I think that they will eventually side with the entertainment industry.  Why?  The have the means to make digital rights management work the way the studio execs want it to.  In exchange, the entertainment industry will work with Microsoft to enshrine its solution in law.  One thing I have learned about monopolies is that, once they reach a certain size, the government begins to use them as proxies for public policy (Ashcroft is already using Microsoft to combat terrorism).  In return, they get protection and support.  Microsoft is at that size.  [John Robb's Radio Weblog] 9:12:59 AM comment

Voice and video chat on the Mac
MacSlash has a discussion underway about voice and video chat clients for the Mac that is a logical jumping off point from my article yesterday about OS X chat clients. 9:06:12 AM comment
