The eternal question for businesses
To keep paper records of everything? Or to go completely digital?
The Guardian considers the pitfalls of electronic records in an article: Electronic trail goes cold.
Paper may seem fragile and ephemeral as a means of preserving information, but its virtues are all too apparent when compared to data stored digitally. Vast amounts of information are created, stored and accessed electronically, bringing with it enormous advantages. [Tomalak's Realm]

When will an Apple Store open in the Pacific Northwest?
I noticed an item on MacCentral that another Apple Store is opening soon, this time in Orlando, Fla. That is cool, but I am wondering if and when an Apple Store might open in the Seattle area? Is Apple avoiding placing a store here since it is in Microsoft's back yard?
To set things straight, there are some good computer shops selling Apple products in the Seattle area. Unfortunately, here in Tacoma, Apple products are hard to come by except through online or catalog shopping, and it really would make a difference when considering buying big ticket Apple products if I could at least get my hands on the machine before plunking down a thousand or more bucks.

Extending the capabilities of Radio 8, from Userland's John Robb:
More than a few people have asked me how they can extend their Radio weblog to provide coverage of new topics. Two ways to do that:
1) Use categories to create new category-specific weblogs. Categories are located just below the editing box on Radio's home page. To create a new category, click on "new." Select a name, description, template, and language for the category. Now, when you post a story, you will have the option to click on the category check box below the editing box to send it to your new category-specific weblog. You can take the link to that new weblog and put it into the margin on the home page template of your site. Easy.
2) Add a new page to your site using the stories menu. Stories are actually just new pages for your weblog website. They are great for longer articles or for a permanent resource. Once you create a story, you can insert its link into the margin on the home page template of your site or just post it to your weblog in an item.
As you can see, you can do lots more than a simple weblog with Radio. [John Robb's Radio Weblog]

iPhoto rolls on: A story on MacCentral notes that iPhoto has hit more than 1 million downloads. I continue to use iPhoto without major problems as the storage bin for my digital photos as I accumulate data for our book Birding Washington. I still look forward to the first update to the program and hope that it will help deal with shortcomings of the program that can now be dealt with through third-party additions. I am still using my copy of iPhoto without any of those add-ons...

Chat client updated: Fire 0.30.a is a major update to the chat client that handles AIM, ICQ, MSN, Yahoo, Jabber and IRC chat protocols in one program. Be prepared to input the account information for each of those services again with this update, though. The program author at Epicware says that the new storage system for account info is needed to prepare for future upgrades...
Update: Fire was updated again later today to version Fire 0.30.b. The new version fixes a bug introduced at the last minute in the previous new version...

Contemplating Web browsers, again: MacSlash has a new discussion underway about what features should be added as the release of Mozilla 1.0 Approaches... The discussion is interesting because readers are pointing out the pluses and minuses of other browsers, and also because no one mentions the main problems that make Mozilla pretty unusable for me - frequent crashing and slow display of my typing when I am doing something like writing for Mac Net Journal in Radio 8. Mozilla is fast at many things, but as a browser to be used for writing, at least on my Pismo PowerBook with 192 megs of RAM under OS X 10.1.3, it is as slow as a dog...
Am I the only one seeing this behavior? Send me a Comment or drop me an e-mail.
