Capturing Olympic Glory - Digitally is a short feature about the Apple technology on display and in use by professional photographers at the games in Utah. 6:05:35 PM comment

I am not seeing any notable differences in working with OS X 10.1.3 just yet, other than the fact that my XCaret Pro CDRW drive from MCE is now functional under iTunes. This will make it a lot easier to burn audio CDs. Data CDs were made more functional with this particular CDRW drive with the last update to OS X...

The only other thing to note about this update is that I have read at least one report that the installation of OS X 10.1.3 wants to have a lot of hard disk space available - up to 500 megs - during the installation process. To be clear, the update doesn't eat 500 megs of disk space permanently, but it wants to have a large chunk of temporary space for the installation. OS X 10.1.3 is available now through the Software Update panel in the System Preferences application. Here is what it offers:
Update 10.1.3 delivers enhancements that improve the reliability of Mac OS X applications, important security features and includes new and updated support for a variety of Digital Hub peripheral devices.

Specific updates include:

CD Disc Recording Peripherals:
- Expanded support for QPS, EZQuest, LaCie, Yamaha, MCE Technologies and Sony devices

Image Capture and iPhoto:
- Improved support for several digital camera models from Canon, Kodak and Sony

Graphics and OpenGL Improvements:
- DVD Playback on external VGA displays on PowerBook G4
- PowerBook video mirroring will be on by default when connecting to a new display
- Improvements for iTunes when the full screen visualizer is used

Networking and Security Improvements:
- Login authentication support for LDAP and Active Directory services
- OpenSSH version 3.0.2p1
- WebDAV support for Digest authentication
- Mail includes support for SSL encryption

If you are updating, as I am, from OS X 10.1.2 then the update will be a 17.3 MB download and it does require a restart once the installer has finished running (There goes my uptime mentioned earlier today...) 5:00:57 PM comment

Mike Cohen from the Macmegasite sent me a note about a G3 machine he had running for 77 days before he encountered a power failure a few days ago. Impressive! One thing that his mail reminded me though is that I have even had OS 9.x machines run for months at a time without a reboot, but only when they were running as servers. I believe that at one point my PowerBook 3400c/200 ran for four months straight when I was serving my Web sites from home.

Uptimes for servers are a different thing than uptimes for regularly used machines like a laptop that serves as my only work computer. 1:23:11 PM comment

A UNIX user's OS X notes is a site full of useful tidbits 12:52:29 PM comment

I haven't posted one of these notes in a long time, but for anyone who still doubts the stability and reliability of OS X, check this out:
12:35PM up 13 days, 20:10, 2 users, load averages: 1.62, 1.81, 1.63
For long-time UNIX users, this is no big deal, I realize. But this kicks butt on anything I could ever do under Mac OS 9.x. And consider that this report of nearly 14 days of continuous operation without a reboot is on a PowerBook that moves from one place to another, that is kept in sleep mode for hours at a time, and that still wakes up and just keeps ticking.

I also want to note that I was impressed this weekend when I was off bird watching for three days in remote sections of Eastern Washington. Each day I left my PowerBook in sleep mode for 8-10 hours at a time and unlike in earlier versions of OS X, I saw virtually no battery time loss from leaving the machine asleep for 8 or more hours at a time. I did however leave my machine plugged in and asleep overnight each night to ensure that the battery remained topped off... Mac OS X Tip of the Day: Dock Tricks

Command-Tab cycles through running apps. Keep the command key help down and press tab to highlight each app in turn. When you lift off the command key, that app will activate. There's a couple of other cool things too. When an app is highlighted, you can press 'h' to hide that app and 'q' to quit the app. Try it - you'll like it.
