QuickTime 6 Changes Everything. Earlier this week at QuickTime Live -- a trade show that focuses on digital video
technologies using QuickTime software -- Apple Computer unveiled two new technologies
that seem destined to turn the digital video market totally upside down. [osOpinion]

Opera Composed for Mac OS X. Opera Software, which makes the notoriously fast and lean Opera Web browser, is looking
to bring more Mac users into the fold with the release of a new OS X-compliant beta that
packs enhanced QuickTime support. [osOpinion]
I have been using Opera for OS X a bit today and it does feel pretty quick from the outset. It also seems to be off to a good start supporting Web standards, and the addition of plug-in and QuickTime support is a good move. But over time I find the performance of Opera can drag. It starts loading pages slower and slower in my unscientific tests. That is why I am using Mozilla to write this right now...

If you use MSN Messenger on a Windows machine, beware:
VIRUS ALERT: This one is real, but not sure what it does. A vice president at Microsoft who's in my Windows Messenger contact list (I'll "xed" out his name to protect the guilty) seemingly sent me an IM message a few seconds ago:
Lxxx Txxx says:
URGENT - Go to http://www.TakeThisOutOfURLToGetVirus_rjdesigns.co.uk/cool Now
(I obfuscated the URL so you wouldn't get the virus, but if you're interested in checking it out, you can figure out what the URL is above).
This will then download a virus and send stuff around to your entire client list through Windows Messenger. So, don't assume that someone's talking to you in instant messenger clients if they send something to you.
The guy who sent me this said "guess you'll see it on the news tomorrow!"
Well, this is the weblog world. We beat the news by a few hours. I guess Microsoft has a few more lines of code to clean up to get their stuff secure. [Scobleizer: Radio 8.0, WinXP News, and More!]

While I am linking to Charles Moore's article from LowEndMac, I want to offer thanks for their mention of this site as a new daily read! The link is great, and fitting since a lot of what I do with Macs in my home office is dealing with older Macs, from a Quadra 660AV to a PowerMac 6100 to a PowerComputing PowerWave desktop machine. And let's not forget the PowerBook 3400c working as a file server, an MP3 server hooked into our stereo and an interactive photo frame displaying some of the digital photos that Natalie and I have taken over the last couple of years.

Charles Moore is impressed with Mozilla 0.9.8.
I should mention that I have been using Mozilla today and as long as I remember not to use the keyboard shortcut to close a tabbed window (command W) then it is stable and fast for me. If it just offered in-line spell checking then I would be set and Mozilla would surpass OmniWeb 4.1sp41 as my secondary browser of choice...

BatChmod is an OS X tool for changing user permissions on files, making it easy to deal with common problems in the system like emptying pesky files that refuse to leave your Trash. And best of all, the useful application is free from developer Renaud Boisjoly.

PowerMail tip: If you are using PowerMail under OS X 10.1.2 and you notice that the search capabilities of the e-mail client are suffering and yielding terrible results, go over to the File menu and scroll down to Database, then choose to Rebuild indexes. This will take a little time, but it forces PowerMail to rebuild the message index and once the process is done then one of the most powerful features of PowerMail will be returned to usefullness!
I sure wish I would have known this yesterday, when I was frustrated by PowerMail's search not working...

Marking the one month anniversary of using Radio 8.0 to add new content to and manage Mac Net Journal, I am toying with the look and feel of the site a bit today, as time allows. I want to add the old Mac Net Journal graphic back into the site.
Meanwhile, I have to say that using Radio has made it much easier to keep up with the posting and editing to Mac Net Journal. This software automates so much that I once coded by hand, and as a result I can post more and offer more in-depth content. That's a win-win!
