MacHTTP 2.5b5 “includes new support for Content Range requests (allowing resumable downloads and incremental serving of PDF files), better threading support, improved Code Red handling, and several smaller bug fixes.” [mac.scripting.com] 3:12:37 PM comment

Charles Moore offers a quick wrap up and examines the features of alternative Mac OS backup utilities.

Since Dantz has announced that it will now charge for technical support of its products, and since Dantz has yet to create a stand-alone version of Retrospect for OS X, there are many people looking for a reliable and easy-to-use backup solution. For the record, I have yet to try any of these products, but I should get on the ball and start investigating the options. Up to this point, I have been doing manual backups of OS X, backing up my Users folder weekly, my Documents and Pictures folder daily, and my Music and Library folders at the root level at least once a month.

Fingers crossed... 12:36:20 PM comment

Dan Gillmor: "No other industry has so successfully persuaded its customers to be guinea pigs in one of industry's great experiments. The technology companies do want to make this stuff work, but we are the product testers as much as the people who have that job title inside the companies that sell it." So says the columnist in PC unreliability rears its ugly head again. 10:12:37 AM comment

Z-Write 3.1 is a finalized version of the non-linear writing program for OS X and OS 9.x. A unique writing program from Stone Table Software, Z-Write combines the capabilities of a simple outlining tool with text editing and organization capabilities. PageSpinner 4.0b1 brings the shareware HTML editor to OS X in a Carbon application. The new version, a free upgrade for owners of a license for PageSpinner 3.1, expires on March 16, 2002. PageSpinner 4.0b1 sells for $29.95. 9:36:02 AM comment

Radio 8.0.4 is an app-only release that adds Simple Cross-Network Scripting, a feature that was designed four years ago, that pushes Radio to the leading-edge in simple client-side scripting of XML-RPC (today) and SOAP (later this month). It has an open driver-based architecture so support for new protocols can be added without kernel changes.  [Scripting News] 9:12:36 AM comment

OK, it appears that AIM does indeed work this morning, but only if I fire up the clunky client application from AOL. Both of the third-party AIM clients that I use, Fire and Adium, cannot connect to the AOL servers this morning. My guess: AOL has moved once again to stop third-party applications from reaching their network. So much for interoperablity. 8:30:19 AM comment

I haven't seen any news items about it just yet, but I notice that so far this morning I cannot get connected to AOL Instant Messenger servers to get online with that chat service. It's possible that AOL is having one of its periodic server downtimes...

Other IM services - ICQ, MSN, Yahoo, etc., all are working just fine. 8:14:51 AM comment
